1973 - Ready for Halloween with what is believed to be the biggest pumpkin grown in Linn County this year is Floyd Schaeffer, who grew this 124 pounder at his home garden at 1121 Spruce St. Schaeffer said he is willing to give the pumpkin to any organization that can make use of it.

On a motion by sometimes-smoker Betty Dedman, the Sweet Home School Board banned all smoking in the meeting room with the specification that a 10 minute break be called and a room be designated for smoking. Puffing on a cigar, Board Member Walt Mulholland questioned the legality of the action and added, "I usually don't smoke here at all, but it gripes me when people tell me that I can't." He bought a pack of cigars specifically for the meeting, and Board Chairman C. Paul Moore said he might put the rule into effect immediately if Mulholland continued smoking next to him for...
