Sweet Home forestry team starts season with win

Sweet Home High School’s Forestry Club won its first competition of the season Saturday, March 5, at Knappa High School, outscoring six other teams.

Sweet Home’s 124 points bested Clatskanie’s 112 and Waldport’s 88.

“Honestly, I was kind of shocked,” said Natural Resources Teacher Blake Manley. “We are top-heavy with a lot of seniors, but a lot of our supporting cast is first-year competitors. I wasn’t sure what it was going to look like, but I was pretty happy with their results.”

Alex Miller finished first in the Timber Cruise.

“It’s great to have a team leader like Alex because he takes a lot of the pressure off of others,” Manley said.

Dom Freeman got first in the Ax Throw. Haley Nunes was first in Demo Speech, and she also teamed up with Tristan Lemmer to finish first in Cable Splice and First Aid, while the team of Rhiley Wilson and Lexi Devlin scored second in the event. Dacotah Pennington took second in the Choker Race.

Pennington also finished third in the Power Buck and First Aid with Miller.

Along with that result, Miller finished fourth in Compass and Pacing, fifth in Tool ID, fifth in Cross Cut with Lemmer, and sixth in Ax Throw.

Lemmer finished third in Log Scale and fifth in Timber Cruise and Tool ID.

Nunes finished fifth in Tool ID and Plant ID.

The team of Pennington and Freeman finished fourth in Cross Cut.

The club’s next competition was at Waldport High School at 9 a.m. on Friday, March 18. pictured at right. Results were not yet available at The New Era’s press time.
