What started with a call for volunteers on Facebook resulted in a massive clean-up effort Saturday morning, Dec. 1, by 40-plus people at the Yellowbottom area of Quartzville.
David Trystman of Sweet Home, one of the organizers, said the goal was to clean up trash and other damage left by campers in the area.
He said homeless people, who move from campsite to campsite in the area, often leave refuse and other residue behind.
A Facebook page called “Keep it Clean, Keep it Green” grew from 15 to more than 200 members over four days before and after the event.
Volunteers, right, got help from the Linn County Sheriff’s Office, the county Parks and Recreation Department, and 4×4 recreational groups Oregon Offroad and his own Oregon Overland and Off-road.
Trystman said the plan is to do it again before the camping season starts. He said he is creating a map on Google that will allow volunteers and others to pinpoint problem areas with GPS coordinates, so the next clean-up group can respond.
