156 teams bowl in SH tourney

Sweet Home Lanes hosted 156 bowling teams over the past three weeks for the consolation bracket of the 2009 Summer Superbowl tournament.

The tournament is the culmination of a summer league, with half of competing teams attending the grand finals at Town and Country in Keizer and half attending the consolation bracket at Sweet Home Lanes.

Contestants from Oregon and Washington attended the tournament, Sweet Home Lanes owner Ron Rettke said. The tournament started on Aug. 25 and finished on Sept. 13, with most games played on weekends.

Each of the mixed teams had five players. Payouts went to the top 78 teams.

The winning team was “Awesomer” from Liberty Lanes in Cottage Grove and a score of 3,730. Second place were the “Undecideds,” 3,698, of Canby Lanes; Butch’s Bad Boys of Cottage Bowl of Cottage Grove, third, 3,632; “Hogan’s Heroes” of Eagle Lanes of Yakima, Wash., fourth, 3,583; and “Extremists” of Lakeshore Lanes of Albany, fifth, 3,582.

The highest placing Sweet Home team was Stone Willy Pizza, which placed 17th with a score of 3,513. Members were Rettke, William Justham, Tiffany Chasteen, Jerry Kennedy and Clara Kennedy.

Also competing was the Waterhole Tavern, with a score of 3,335. Members included Cheri Doll, Brittany Warthen, Sandie Brown, Heather Ames and Mel Rogers.

The high games for the tournament were bowled by Pete Christensen of “Spare Parts” from Eagle Lanes and Walt Lundgren of the “Misfits” from Highland Bowl in Corvallis. Each bowled a 290.
