Seventeen of 26 Huskies placed Saturday as Sweet Home took second at the Roseburg Invitational Wrestling Tournament.
Host Roseburg took the championship with 509 points. Sweet Home had 279.5 followed by Coquille, 236.5; Glide, 134; Riddle, 112; South Umpqua, 83; Glendale, 84; North Douglas, 47; Yoncalla, 36.5; Sutherlin, 31; Douglas, 0.
“Roseburg is the real thing,” Coach Steve Thorpe said. “They are and excellent, well-coached team. Their coach is Steve Landers, who formerly coached at Dallas.”
The Huskies didn’t crown any champions, although Coach Thorpe said he believed they should have had two or three.
“We placed 17 wrestlers, so that’s not bad,” Coach Thorpe said. “This tournament was set up like a district tournament, including consolations rounds and a spotlight finals. It was a good experience because we have a lot of young wrestlers. This will pay off later in the season.”
Husky placers included:
103: Shane Vandehei, second; John Sutton, sixth.
119: Tom Helfrich, fourth.
125: Andrew Swanson, second; John Farris, sixth.
