3 Huskies compete in state golf

Three Sweet Home golfers ended up in the state tournament last week, after a rollercoaster couple of days in which they were first told they were in, then told they were out, then told they were back in.

Juniors Carson Perry and Joseph Hiemenz played in the 4A boys championship 18-hole round, and Maren Weld played in the girls’, both held at Trysting Tree in Corvallis.

Perry shot a 50-37-97, including making par on the five-stroke 16th hole, to finish 43rd out of 58 players in the boys round. Hiemenz shot an even 50-50-100 to finish 48th, making par on five holes but struggling on some others, while Perry managed to stay in bogey range for much of the round, especially after he got past the first three holes.

Marist won the team title over Woodburn, 301-322, but Cole Beyer of Woodburn took the individual title by beating Tillamook’s Elliott Lee-Till in a playoff, after both finished with 68s on the par 71 course. Cascade’s Ramsey Gordan was eighth, with a 76, followed by Woodburn’s Ty Beyer (77) and Jordan Blem (77). Marist’s four scorers finished in the top 12, led by Alex Vendetti, who was third with a 67.

In the girls championships, Weld placed 41st in a field of 65 players, scoring a 51-54-105.
