3 SHJH wrestlers place in state meet

The Sweet Home Junior High wrestling team placed 11th out of 78 teams at the state tournament Saturday in Woodburn.

“It was a very tough tournament,” said Coach Ken Weld. “All the kids wrestled very well. There was just a lot of competition at this tournament.”

The Tigers’ top placer was Kris Newport at 105 pounds. Newport beat three seeded wrestlers, including the top-seeded wrestler from the eastern Oregon regional, to make it to the finals, Weld said.

“He wrestled an incredible match to beat that kid,” said Weld.

Newport lost the final match 4-3 to a wrestler from Gresham.

Brock Crocker placed fourth at 110 pounds, while heavyweight Ethan Rowe placed fifth.

Mitchell Grove and Taylor Tagle also wrestled for the Tigers but did not place.
