5 Huskies win state titles at freestyle, Greco championships

Colton Schilling won his second straight high school triple crown at the Oregon Wrestling Association Freestyle and Greco-Roman State Championships held April 30 and May 1 at Oregon State University.

Schilling won both the freestyle and Greco championships at 119 pounds in the Junior division.

He is the third wrestler in history from Sweet Home to have earned triple crowns – OSAA state championship as well as the freestyle and Greco titles – Uriel Santana in 1981 and Troy Santana in 1984.

He was one of five champions from Sweet Home this year, among the largest group of wrestlers the Sweet Home Mat Club has ever sent to the state championships, Coach Steve Thope said.

“This shows the dedication that is involved for these wrestlers to be successful,” he said. “They have been wrestling for six months. I am proud of all of these guys.”

The other champions included the following:

n Tyler Cowger won the freestyle and Greco championships at 140 pounds in the Cadet division;

n Tyler Schilling, Colton’s younger brother, who won the freestyle and Greco championships at 91 pounds in the Schoolboy division;

n Travis Thorpe, Steve Thorpe’s son, who won the freestyle and Greco championships at 80 pounds in the Intermediate division; and

n Justin Nicholson, who is in his first year of wrestling and won the Greco state championship in the 98-pound Bantam division and placed second in freestyle.

Four other wrestlers were runners-up, including the following:

n Scottie Stockman was runner-up in Greco and third in freestyle at 119 pounds in the Junior Division;

n Brayden Newport was second in freestyle in the 60-pound Bantam division;

n Tyrel Miller was second in freestyle and third in Greco in the 81-pound Schoolboy division; and

n Robert Watkins was runner-up in both Freestyle and Greco in the 65-pound Intermediate division,

Other place-winners included the following:

n Trever Olson, sixth in Greco in the 145-pound Junior division;

n Kyle Watkins, fifth in freestyle in the 45-pound Bantam division;

n Robbie Yunke, fourth in both freestyle and Greco in the 70-pound Intermediate division;

n Damian Shocker, fourth in freestyle and third in Greco in the 87-pound Intermediate division;

n Ricky Yunke, third in freestyle and fourth in Greco in the 75-pound Novice division; and

n Justin Kurtz, fourth in freestyle and third in Greco in the 75-pound Novice division.

Also competing, but not placing – mostly due to injury defaults, were Bobby Malloy (135 pounds Cadet); Wade Paulus (189 pounds Cadet); Colby DeCleve (125 pounds Junior); Alex Armstrong (189 pounds Junior); and Zach Gill (285 pounds Junior).

Steve Thorpe said after taking May off, then the younger wrestlers will compete at the Western Regionals June 19-25 in Pocotello, Idaho.

“This is a great opportunity for them,” he said.

Colton Schilling, Cowger and Olsen will compete with the Oregon national team in July at the Freestyle and Greco National Championships in Fargo, N.D.

He said he was appreciative of “the incredible support” from the community for the wrestling program and for help from the staff of coaches who help with the Mat Club.

“Hats off to club coaches Steve Schilling, Fritz Yunke, Almozo Kurtz and JD Watkins who helped coach the club this spring,” Thorpe said.
