Town hall set to discuss clinic
Samaritan Health Services is holding a virtual town hall at noon Thursday, March 3, to discuss the June 2022 construction of a new 15,000-square-foot family medicine clinic, urgent-care and heli-pad on Highway 20 near Wiley Creek Senior Living, 5050 Mountain Fir St., Sweet Home.
Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital CEO Marty Cahill, Lebanon Community Hospital Foundation Executive Director Brandy O’Bannon and Samaritan Health Services Milt Moran will be present.
Samaritan has partnered with Mahlum Architects on the $9.5 million project, which is being funded by proceeds from the sale of the Wiley Creek Community, a Samaritan Health Services investment, and local philanthropy.

Meals on Wheels weekly menu
Meals on Wheels offers take-out lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.
The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.
Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.
The menu on Friday, March 4, is an herbed chicken patty with gravy or breaded fish with tartar sauce, whipped potatoes, a California vegetable blend, sunflower seed bread and peaches.
The menu on Monday, March 7, is chicken tetrazzini or Western pork stew, green beans, confetti cole slaw, a white dinner roll and an orange whip.
The menu on Tuesday, March 8, is a Mexican pasta bake or shepherd’s pie, a Capri vegetable blend, tossed salad, rye bran roll and a key lime bar.

First Friday fetes author Dr. Seuss
Lebanon Downtown Association will celebrate its monthly First Friday with a birthday tribute to Dr. Seuss from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 4.
The Dr. Seuss’s Birthday Bash will include sweets, plush animal rides, popcorn and cotton candy, games, and more.

Virtual native bees conference offered
Linn County Master Gardeners will hold their eighth annual BEEvent Pollinator Conference from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 5, in a virtual format.
Cost is $25 for all sessions, which will be interspersed by short breaks. Registering allows participants to watch or re-watch the recorded conference later. Register at LinnMasterGardeners.com.
National, state and local experts will discuss native bees and other insects that help gardeners and small farmers. Speakers and topics include:
— Dr. Olivia Carril, author and educator, who will discuss “Bee-Plant Relationships: A Match Made in Heaven, or Love on the Rocks?”
— Erin Wickliffe of the Oregon Department of Agriculture, who will speak on “The Bug Eat Bug World in your Backyard;”
— Dr. Gail Langellotto, professor of horticulture at Oregon State University and state coordinator of the Extension Service Master Gardener Program, whose presentation will be “Native Plant-Bee Associations in Western Oregon;” and
— Sarah Kincaid, Bee Atlas education coordinator, who will talk about “The Oregon Orchard Bee Health Cocoon Survey.”
‘Central Park Five’ composer at OSU
Pulitzer Prize-winning pianist/composer Anthony Davis will appear for a conversation and performance in support of Oregon State University’s upcoming Arts and Education Complex at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 9, at the LaSells Stewart Center on OSU’s main Corvallis campus.
Davis received the Pulitzer in Music in 2020 for his “The Central Park Five” (with a libretto by Richard Wesley), which premiered at Southern California’s Long Beach Opera in 2019. The operatic work relives the 1989 convictions of five African-American and Latino teenagers for assaulting a white woman in New York’s Central Park, a verdict overturned in 2002.
Davis is expected to play some of those pieces onstage during the event, to be moderated by OSU assistant professor of Music Dana Reason, and will take questions from the audience.

SAFE holds fundraising drive
The Sweet Home High School SAFE committee will hold a can, bottle and coin drive from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 12, at O’Reilly Auto Parts, 1118 Main St.
The event raises funds for the high school’s Class of 2022.
Woman’s group to host dinner
After 5 Connection will host a dinner for local women from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, at Bloom Boutique and Tea House, 712 Main St., Lebanon.
The program, “Tempting Tea and Treats,” includes a presentation by Bloom Boutique owner Shannon Miller, who will share information on different teas and discuss the perfect preparation.
Guest speaker Judy Glenney, a four-time national weightlifting champion and Olympic judge for competitions, will present a humorous reflection on the milestones of womanhood.
All women are invited. Cost is $15. Credit cards cannot be accepted.

Online parenting classes scheduled
Parenting Success Network and Samaritan Health Services are offering three free online classes this month.
— “Effective Black Parenting: Raising Proud, Confident and Healthy African-American Children,” 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays, March 17 through June 23. Participants will learn basic parenting skills from the history and perspective of African-American culture, with skills taught through African proverbs to illustrate the relationship of parenting skills through the view and wisdom of African ancestors. ‘Stand By Me’ Day T-shirt contest
The ‘Stand By Me’ Day Committee will host a T-shirt design contest for the 2022 Stand by Me Day on July 23.
The committee, in consultation with a professional graphic artist, will choose two designs to be made into T-shirts for this year’s event.
Winning artists will each receive two free T-shirts and a $50 gift certificate for ‘Stand By Me’ memorabilia. Their name will be included on the graphic.
All art must be original. No scenes from the film or its promotional materials may be used. No copyrighted images may be used.
Artists are encouraged to use clean lines and simple colors. The committee reserves the right to make alterations needed to create the best image on a T-shirt.
The images must be given a name and be signed by the artist. The name needs to be referenced on the email subject line and on the entry form as well
More than one image may be entered, but signed entry forms must be completed for each. Entry forms are available at https://bit.ly/3voyd2H.
Images may be submitted electronically, preferably as a jpg, but the image could be saved in tiff, eps, pdf, png or psd formats as well. Each image transmission must include a name and contact phone number.
The scanned images must be submitted by email to [email protected] by midnight March 14.
Artists who are unable to scan an image created on paper are asked to send the original to Linn County Museum Friends, Box 607, Brownsville, OR 97327. Include a name and contact phone number. Originals will not be returned.
Winners will be announced April 8 on the Linn County Historical Museum and ‘Stand By Me’ Day Facebook pages and at linnmuseum.com. The two winners will be contacted directly and be asked to sign an artist’s release form.
Search and Rescue training academy
The Linn County Sheriff’s Office is recruiting youth aged 14 to 18 to participate in its 28th 10-day Search and Rescue Team Training Academy, scheduled for June 17-27, 2022.
Search and Rescue team members often work alongside deputies of the Linn County Sheriff’s Office. Past members have gone into careers in law enforcement, computer programming, architecture, nuclear physics, business, and the armed forces.
Applicants must attend one recruit meeting at 7 p.m. March 14, April 11 or May 9. Successful applicants will be eligible to attend the 10-day Search and Rescue Training Academy in June.
The application process includes oral interviews, a background check and physical aptitude test.
