Genealogists to
host workshop
Sweet Home Genealogical Society will hold its 40th annual workshop Friday and Saturday, March 13-14, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Genealogical Library, 1223 Kalmia St.
Speakers will include Susan Copple on “Census Records: Finding More Information at Ancestry” and “Genealogy Organization,” Douglas Crosby on “The Atlantic Crossing: The Emigrant Experience” and
“A Genealogical Research Trip,” Eric Schaefer on “Basics of Genetic (DNA) Genealogy” and “Adding DNA to Your Genealogy Toolbox,” and Pam Vestal on “How to Write Ancestral Stories Your Relatives Will Want to Read” and “Why They Left, Where They Went, and the Tales Their Journeys Can Reveal,” along with showings of the video “Hill to Mill.”
Cost is $15 per day for members, $17.50 for non-members. High school students’ admission is $5 per day. Lunch tickets cost $7 per day.

GOP to host Meet and Greet Saturday
Linn County Republicans will host a Meet and Greet for local party political candidates from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday, March 14, at Sweet Home Police Department, 1950 Main St.
The public is welcome to meet candidates and find out more about local GOP activities. Refreshments will be served.
Water trail trip at
Cheadle Lake Park
Build Lebanon Trails will host a water trail “hike” starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 14, at Cheadle Lake Park in Lebanon.
Bring your kayak, canoe, or other non-motorized watercraft and join in on an exploration of the water trail on the lake. Learn about the history of the natural lake located within the city limits and the development of this crown jewel of the Lebanon trail system plan.
The event starts promptly at the time indicated. Registration is open from 8:15 – 8:55 a.m. All participants must sign a waiver of liability form to participate. The waiver includes permission to appear in photos taken of the event.
Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. No dogs will be allowed.
All participants on the water must wear a life vest. Be prepared; wear appropriate clothing and footwear for a cold morning on the water.
Whisper System listening devices are available so everyone can hear.
Meet at the Cheadle Lake North Shore parking lot and boat launch off River Drive. Look for BLT event signs.
Foundation to open
grant applications
The Sweet Home Community Foundation will begin accepting grant applications beginning Sunday, March 15.
The goal of the Foundation is to provide funding and support to a wide variety of Sweet Home community projects. Special consideration is placed on projects that provide lasting benefits to our community.
Starting this year there are two grant programs:
SHCF Community Grants are given in the following broad categories: Children and Families; Education; Community Livability and Arts and Culture. Grants up to $2,500 are awarded.
The Alice Blazer Grant will total as much as $10,000 and will require a more comprehensive application process. This grant is specifically for projects able to demonstrate tangible long term community benefits; a positive wide-reaching impact and having the necessary additional financial or in-kind support to achieve success.
The initial application for both grant programs can be submitted online at giveshcf.org/grant2020 from through April 15, 2020.
Grant applicants must be a 501(c) 3 or other qualified tax-exempt organization or the proposed project may be implemented in partnership or affiliation with such an organization.
Support for the foundation is provided through the generosity of local individuals and businesses.
Grant award recipients will be announced in May.
PEO scholarship plant sale ongoing
PEO Chapter FA is selling plants through April 13.
Proceeds go to scholarships for local women, both current graduates and those returning to school.
Flowers, herbs, vegetables and some potted plants are available.
Orders and payment are due by April 13. Plants will be available for pickup or delivery on May 7.

Gallery art show
features cut paper
Linda Herd and Melissa Babcock Saylor are featured artists at Gallery Calapooia for the month of March at 222 First Ave. SW in Albany.
Their works will be on view through March 28. A reception for the artists will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 6, at the gallery.
Their show, “Now Cut That Out,” features cut images. Babcock Saylor uses cut paper in her collages and Herd cuts out backgrounds to reveal images in her copper and silver jewelry designs. Herd uses some of Babcock Saylor’s hand made papers to accentuate her images.
The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday, from 11—6.
Women of Christ
praise night
Mid-Valley Women of Christ will host a Valley-Wide Night of Praise and Worship at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 19, at Life Community Church 4900 NW Hwy 99 Corvallis.
Immensely popular, these praise events draw over 800 women statewide as the ministry concludes 47 classes of Community Bible Studies held in 21 cities across seven Oregon counties. Doors open at 6 p.m. Participants are encouraged to arrive early as these events fill quickly.
The speaker will be Kim-Maree Janzen, an Australian-born worship leader who is currently an adjunct professor of music at Portland Bible College. Kim-Maree has almost of decade of experience as a worship pastor, worship leader, songwriter, recording artist and college professor. Kim-Maree currently resides in Vancouver, Wash.
The evening’s music will be led by Albany-based worship leader Chris Spivey and the Willamette Community Church Worship Team.
The free event is open to all women. Donations will be accepted during a free-will offering that will be taken.

Meals on Wheels
weekly menu
Meals on Wheels offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.
The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.
First-time diners are invited to come in and have a free lunch to give it a try.
Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.
The menu on Friday, March 13, is chicken divan or vegetarian chili, chuckwagon corn, tossed salad, oatmeal roll and apple rhubarb crisp.
The menu on Monday, March 16, is chicken with paprika cream sauce or sliced ham with orange glaze, whipped sweet potatoes, spinach, wheat bread and peaches.
The menu on Tuesday, March 17, is a St. Patrick’s Day special of corned beef and cabbage or macaroni and cheese, green peas, apple cranberry coleslaw, cracked wheat roll and shamrock cake.
Volunteers are needed for both kitchen help and meal delivery.
