Gardener
volunteers
needed
Do
you visit gardens on vacation? Stop neighbors in their yards to
ask about their plants? Give free advice to fellow shoppers at
the nursery? Love gardening, want to know more and enjoy giving
back to your community?
Consider
joining the Oregon State University Extension Linn County Master
Gardener program.
People
certified as Master Gardener volunteers are required to participate
in a class one day a week, for 11 consecutive weeks in January,
February and March for a total of 66 hours of classroom instruction.
Some previous gardening experience is helpful, but not a requirement.
Then there are a required 66 hours of volunteer service—usually
just the start of a lifetime of garden-related volunteering,
friendship and fun as a member of the Linn County Master Gardener
Association.
The
deadline for applications is Dec. 1. A required orientation will be
held Dec. 3 at the Linn County OSU Extension Office, 33630 McFarland
Road, Tangent.

Tax-Aide
seeking
volunteers
for 2016
AARP
Foundation Tax-Aide, the nation’s largest, free, volunteer tax
assistance and preparation service, is seeking volunteers in Linn
County for the upcoming tax season.
Tax
counselors, on-site greeters, appointment schedulers and volunteers
who speak a second language are needed.
Volunteers
of all ages and backgrounds are welcome. You do not need to be an
AARP member or retiree to volunteer. No prior experience is needed.
Training is provided.
Last
year in Benton and Linn counties, AARP volunteers helped more than
3,200 low- and moderate- income taxpayers, with special attention
given to persons age 60 and over, prepare and file their federal and
Oregon state tax returns at no-cost and with no strings attached.

Teachers’
artwork
on
display at LBCC
An
exhibit of work by three art instructors from Linn-Benton Community
College’s Benton Center will be shown through Dec. 11 in LBCC’s
North Santiam Gallery, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.
The
exhibit represents a wide range of artistic approaches, from the
colorful and diverse paintings by Mark Allison, to the expressive,
monumental mixed media drawings of Andrew Myers, to the delicate,
sophisticated, and whimsical ceramics of Renee McKitterick.
North
Santiam Hall Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through
Friday.
Low-vision
group meeting Nov. 18
The
Mid-Valley Low Vision Support Group will host Crystal Maceira, a
certified iridologist, at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, at 1929
Grand Prairie Road in Albany.
Iridology
is the holistic science of inherited color and markings found in the
irises of eyes that tell the practitioner the strengths and
weaknesses within the body. Maceira will also discuss how Iridology
can control health, and which herbs promote healthy eyes. She
is owner of Positive Life Changes located in Albany.
The
low vision support group meets the third Wednesday of each month, at
the same time and location. The meetings are free and programs are in
support of low-vision and blind people, but all interested people are
welcome to attend. Light refreshments are served.

Fir
Lawn Lutheran Church will hold its annual Holiday Bazaar from 5 to 8
p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, at
the corner of 1st Avenue and Holley Road.
Enjoy
the friendly atmosphere, purchase baked goods and browse an array of
quality vendors while listening to live music.

Bingo
Saturday

The
Sweet Home High School Forestry Club and the Volunteer Firefighters
Association will hold Turkey Bingo from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Nov.
21, at the Sweet Home High School Cafeteria.
Every
Bingo wins a turkey. This is a family event, so all ages are welcome
but minors must be accompanied by a parent. Concessions will be
available and door prizes and raffle drawings will be held. Winners
must be present.
Cards
are 25 cents each or contestants can play all night for $20 (four
cards).

Fund-raiser
to buy
food
for needy
Fair
Share Gleaners is selling tickets for a Thanksgiving fund-raiser to
raise money for Fair Share member families in the Sweet Home
community.
Tickets
are $1 each or six for $5. The prize is a Thanksgiving basket
including a turkey, ham and all the trimmings, plus extras. The
winning ticket will be drawn Monday, Nov. 23.

Orange
sale for XC and track teams
Sweet
Home High School track and cross-country programs are holding their
annual fall Sweet and Nutritious Fund-raiser sale of fresh oranges
and grapefruit.
Fresh
navel oranges from California’s central San Joaquin Valley and Rio
Star grapefruit from south Texas will be delivered by truck on Dec.
5. Order deadline is Nov. 24.
Cost
is $25 per 20-pound carton or $13 for half a case.

‘Figaro’
acts to be staged at OSU
The
Oregon State University Opera Workshop will present “An Evening of
Opera,” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 24, in OSU’s new Learning
Innovation Center, Room 128, 165 S.W. Sackett Place, Corvallis.
The
program will be Acts I and II of Mozart’s “The Marriage of
Figaro,” sung in English and set in a 1950s “Mad Men”-era
theme. The storyline involves Figaro, his fiancée, his boss, and a
wedding day love triangle that makes his life complicated.
Tickets
are $7 in advance or $10 at the door, with open seating. Advance
tickets may be purchased online at TicketTomato.com. OSU students
will be admitted free with a valid student ID card. Tickets will be
sold at the Learning Innovation Center beginning at 6:30 p.m. on the
evening of the performance.
Wreaths
on sale

Chapter FA members are taking pre-orders for handmade fresh wreaths.
The
wreaths will be made on 14-inch frames with fresh local greenery and
adorned with pine cones and large fluffy bows.
Cost
is $15 each.
They
will be available for pickup from Nov. 30 to Dec. 3 at 27745 Riggs
Hill Road. Earlier pickup or delivery may be made by special
arrangement.

Gift
collection for
Kids
Store program
The
Home Sweet Home for Christmas Committee will host a Kids Store on
Saturday, Dec. 12, which will provide the opportunity for any child
to shop for free for parents and siblings.
The
committee is collecting new, unwrapped items that can be sold for
less than $10, for children through adults. Donations are needed by
Dec. 4 and can be dropped off at Trash to Treasure, 1023 Main St. or
in a drop box at Santiam Variety Store in the Safeway Plaza. The
committee also needs wrapping paper, tape and Christmas bags.
The
event will take place from noon to 4 p.m. on Dec. 12 at the American
Legion Hall, 1127 Long St. Participating children will receive
tickets to redeem the amount of gifts they need when they arrive.
Adults
will escort children as they shop.
After
volunteers wrap and label gifts, children can take them home and put
them under their Christmas trees.
The
Kids Store will be held in conjunction with the Rocking Around the
Christmas Tree event on Dec. 12.

on Wheels weekly menu
Meals
on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the
Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays,
Tuesdays and Fridays.
The
lunch menu on Friday, Nov. 20, is chicken or tuna salad sandwich half
on wheat bread, Popeye potato soup, pineapple slaw and cinnamon
applesauce.
The
menu for Monday, Nov. 23, is chicken and dumplings or spaghetti with
meat sauce and garlic roll, cut green beans, marinated spring garden
salad and peaches.
The
menu for Tuesday, Nov. 24, is baked ham with orange glaze or roast
turkey with gravy, whipped potatoes with gravy, peas and onions,
wheat roll, cranberry sauce and pumpkin bar.
