Farmers Market

dinner Friday

A Fall Festival Dinner to benefit the Sweet Home Farmers Market will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall, 580 Main St.

Tickets are $10. The menu will feature authentic classic dishes using locally grown ingredients: salad with mixed greens and bread, lasagna a la fraga, assorted sweets for dessert and beverages, including organic free-trade coffee and tea. Beer and wine will be available at the VFW cash bar.

B&G Club auction

Saturday night

The Boys & Girls Club of the Greater Santiam will hold its annual fall auction, benefitting the Sweet Home branch, at 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, at the club, 890 18th Ave.

The theme will be “A Redneck Red Carpet Affair: Local Yokels Raisin’ $$$ for Kids!”

Individual seats are $50 per person. Doors open at 5 p.m., the buffet dinner will be available at 6:30 p.m. and the live auction will start at 7:30 p.m. The “redneck buffet,” planned by members of the Sweet Home auction committee, led by Wendi Melcher, will include pulled pork, bbq chicken and all the fixin’s. A bar will be provided by The Point restaurant.

Auction items include: a purebred white golden retriever puppy; a potting bench made by Sweet Home High School woodshop students; a pro sports weekend including two tickets to any game, airfare and lodging; a five-night all-inclusive Cancun vacation; several guided fishing trips; an electric guitar autographed by 2015 Jamboree performers; and more than 200 silent- and almost-live auction items with price points that allow anyone and everyone to “have a winning bid.”

Free info session on inherited cancer

Understanding hereditary can-cers will be the emphasis of the 2015 Project H.E.R. Education Day, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, in the Agape Room, Eastside Christian Church, 1910 Grand Prairie Road SE, in Albany.

The free event is for everyone, including cancer survivors and family members, who are interested in understanding genetic risks and cancer risk reduction. In addition, there will be an opportunity to learn more about Mammacare self-breast exam techniques and bone density and bone health.

Nepal fund-raiser

Oct. 10 in Corvallis

The Padma Charitable Foundation will show a Bhutanese film, “Travelers and Magicians,” during a fund-raiser for Nepal earthquake relief from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, at the Corvallis Oddfellows Hall, 223 SW 2nd St.

Donations will assist the Nepalese people, who are rebuilding their lives after the 2015 earthquake, which killed more than 9,000. Lama Tsering Gyaltsen, who was in Kathmandu during the quake and for weeks afterwards, will report on the impacts of the widespread devastation.

Thousands are still struggling without shelter, infrastructure and basic medical care.

Donations are accepted at the door.

Sheriff’s posse

open house Sunday

The Linn County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse will hold an open house from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, to celebrate nearly 70 years of service, at the Linn County Fairgrounds Conference Room A.

The Linn County Mounted Posse was formed in 1946 and is an all-volunteer organization that serves the Sheriff’s Office and the county in several ways.

The posse perpetuates interest in western horsemanship, as well as customs and traditions from the early days; members participate in search and rescue missions; it provides mounted patrols at special functions, participates in charitable causes and community activities such as providing horse rides for kids with special needs.

Sheriff Bruce Riley, along with several retired Linn County sheriffs, will be on hand to share a few words. Many historical items will be on display for the public’s viewing.

Refreshments will be served.

Women’s dinner

to feature staging

Local women are invited to After Five Connection from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, at Kings Coffee House, 661 S. Main St. in Lebanon.

Marty Fulford of Corvallis, an expert decorator, will demonstrate and discuss creating welcoming living spaces and hints for staging when a home is being sold. Guest speaker will be Betty Barnett, of Renton, Wash., a teacher and bookstore manager who is a gifted storyteller.

Cost for the dinner and program is $8.50. Credit cards are not accepted. All are welcome.

Library to host

Poe storyteller

Storyteller Christopher Leebrick will present “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe, followed by a lively discussion about the story and the author at the Sweet Home Public Library at 6:15 p.m. on Oct. 15.

The program will continue with one or two spooky stories from around the globe, concluding with a final short piece by Poe.

Library officials warn that the story is not appropriate for younger children and suggests that spectators be 12 or older.

Meals on Wheels

weekly menu

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.

Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.

The lunch menu on Friday, Oct. 9, is breaded baked fish with Tartar sauce, or meatloaf with gravy, Colcannon potatoes, green peas, garlic bread and applesauce.

The menu for Monday, Oct. 12, is ground beef and noodles or sweet and sour chicken with rice, whole kernel corn, marinated spring garden salad, multigrain roll and spiced pears.

The menu for Tuesday, Oct. 13, is BBQ smokehouse chop or rotisserie-style chicken, Lyonnaise potatoes, broccoli cuts, bran wheat bread and peanut butter bar.
