local schools

Sweet

Home School District is offering free lunch to all children ages 18

and under through the summer.

Meals

will be served through Aug. 21, except for July 31 due to the Oregon

Jamboree.

Lunch

will be served from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at:

– Sweet Home High School, 1641 Long St.

– Hawthorne Elementary School, 3205 E. Long St.

– Oak Heights Elementary School, 610 Elm St. and

– Little Promises, 28028 Pleasant Valley Road.

Lunch

will be served from 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. at:

– Ashbrook Park, 28th Avenue and Juniper Street;

– Northside Park, 11th Avenue and Redwood Street; and

– Sweet Home Skate Park, 1920 Long St.

Breakfast

will also be served from 8:30 to 9 a.m. at Little Promises.

Lunch

will also be served at First Baptist Church, 2470 Main St., during

Vacation Bible School, June 22-26.

The

program is made possible through the federal Summer Food Service

Program for children, offered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Theater

camp to

present

musical

Lebanon

Association for Theatre Arts’ musical theatre kids’ camp will

perform “Follow Your Dreams” this weekend at Lebanon High School

Auditorium.

The

drama is the story of a little girl named Tori who loves to dance and

whose circumstances don’t allow her to take dance lessons. As the

years go by, Tori dreams of a life of dancing. Her dreams become a

reality through cheerleading and her school dance team. The state

dance team competition provides her with an opportunity to make her

dream come true.

The

cast includes 52 children, with tech assistance from six others.

Shows

are at 7 p.m. Friday, June 26, and 2 p.m. Saturday, June 27. Tickets

are $5 per person or $10 for a family of four.

forest

owners

The

Oregon Department of Forestry’s Committee for Family Forestlands

invites family forestland owners to learn about a developing

strategic initiative to help them during a discussion of the

strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats family forest

owners face.

The

committee will meet from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, June 26, at the

Oregon Department of Forestry, Santiam Room Building D, 2600 State

Street, Salem.

Peter

Daugherty, chief of the Private Forests Division will provide

analysis and updates of legislation pertaining to streamside shade

buffers. Jennifer Weikel, an agency biologist, will present

information about the bald eagles’ comeback and how it may impact

forested lands.

Before

noon the committee will hear about taxes and large woody debris,

which helps create healthy fish habitat. Tammy Cushing, Oregon State

University’s Starker chair of private and family forestry, will

discuss taxes and forestry information affecting family forest

owners.

The

committee welcomes public input at its meetings.

The

committee researches policies impacting family forestland viability,

resource protection, and forestry benefits. Based on its findings the

committee recommends actions to the Oregon Board of Forestry and

State Forester.

Friday

The

Boys & Girls Club of the Greater Santiam will hold its annual

Linn-Co Credit Union Open – Charity Golf Tournament June 26 at

Mallard Creek Golf Course.

The

event has openings for 128 golfers, limited to 32 foursomes, to make

the tournament fast and fun.

Foursome

registration includes cart and green fees for four players, a light

breakfast and BBQ lunch. The tournament is expected to raise more

than $30,000 to benefit after-school programs in both Sweet Home and

Lebanon.

concert at Nazarene church

A

free gospel concert featuring The Griffins will be held at 6 p.m.

Saturday, June 27, at the Church of the Nazarene, 415 Holley Road.

Griffins, a three-member vocal group, hail from Gladstone.

collection

for

backpacks

Harvest

Christian Center will collect cans and bottles this Saturday, June

27, and throughout July to help fund the church’s annual Back

to School Bash in which free backpacks and school supplies will

be distributed to students in the Sweet Home School District.

donate, deliver cans to Harvest Christian Center at 43rd Ave-nue and

Long Street or call Kristin Adams at (541) 367-6962 for a special

pickup. The Back to School Bash is slated for Aug. 17.

OSU

offers class

on

freezing, drying

Oregon

State University Extension Service Master Food Preservers in Lane

County will offer a class on freezing and drying, a great alternative

for those who are reluctant to try canning.

The

class will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 27, at the

Community of Christ Church, 1485 Gilham Road in Eugene. Cost is $40.

The

class will teach the best techniques for preparing the foods for

drying and freezing, equipment needed, packaging, and storage.

Participants can learn to dry foods for camping and long-term

storage. The class will have some hands-on activities. Each

participant will take home some berries ready for the freezer as well

as samples of dried and prepared foods.

This

class is particularly appropriate for beginners. Freezing and

drying are the simplest methods of preserving foods yet will provide

top nutrition and quality for year around enjoyment.

Meals

on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the

Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays,

Tuesdays and Fridays.

The

Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.

First-time

diners are invited to come in and have a free lunch to give it a try.

Suggested

donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea

upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.

The

lunch menu on Friday, June 26, is turkey club minisalad or Santa Fe

chicken salad on spinach Romaine, ham barley soup, oatmeal roll and

spiced applesauce.

The

menu for Monday, June 29, is beef mushroom patty or country

meatballs with gravy, whipped potatoes, carrots, dill bread and apple

crisp.

The

menu for Tuesday, June 30, is creamed turkey and vegetables or pork

sausage gravy, whipped potatoes, broccoli cuts, bran rye bread and

chilled peaches.
