Karaoke deadline

Friday, June 12, is the deadline to participate in the Sweet Home Veterans Club and Double D Karaoke’s Ninth Annual Karaoke Contest, which will run June 13-27 at the club.

The event will also include a membership drive for the club. The contest will be held three Saturday nights, June 13, 20 and 27, and generally draws a crowd of 100-plus. It is open to the public.

The contest begins promptly at 7 p.m. all three nights. Entry fee is $8. Cash, prizes and more is up for grabs. Only karaoke CD’s will be allowed for accompaniment.

Openings remain for golf tourney

Sweet Home Elks will hold their annual Howard Drago Memorial Golf Tournament Saturday, June 13, at Pineway Golf Course, 30949 Pineway Road, in Lebanon.

The 18-hole event will start at 8:15 a.m. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m.

Prizes include gift cards, rounds of golf and raffle items. Cost is $50 per person.

Proceeds will benefit the Elks’ projects for youth, which include the Americanism Essay Contest, Hoop Shoot Free Throw Contest, eye care, scholarships, support for various local youth organizations, the Sweet Home Auditorium revitalization effort and much more.

Car show and cruise at Cheadle

The Lebanon Chamber of Commerce will hold its second annual Classic Car Cruz ’N’ June 13 at Cheadle Lake.

The event begins at 8:30 a.m., at the park, with an eight-mile “Cruise the Gut” through downtown to Lebanon Pill Box and back to the park. Lebanon police will escort the parade of classic cars.

The actual car show begins at 10 a.m., with 18 trophies ready to take home including: Best Muscle, Best Classic (1964-94), Antique (built before 1965), Best in Show Car/Truck, Best Paint Job, Rattiest Rattrod, Best Motorcycle, Best Corvette, Best Commercial Vehicle, and a new one this year: Best Restoration from Car Owner under 21. There will also be awards for the farthest traveled and the best participation from a car club.

The event also includes award-winning Mega Foods BBQ Chicken, the Albany Swing Band and KSHO AM920 will broadcast the Cruise live!

Driver’s safety for

seniors June 15-16

Sweet Home Police Department will host a Driver’s Safety Class from 9 a.m. to noon Monday and Tuesday, June 15 and 16, in SHPD’s training room.

AARP’s program is designed to help develop and reinforce safe driving skills and techniques. Satisfactory completion of this class may qualify you for reduced auto insurance premiums (check with your insurance carrier on whether that is the case for you).

Cost is $15 for AARP members, $20 for non-members, to cover materials.

Farm machinery

safety class at LBCC

A three-day Tractor and Farm Machinery Safety Training will be held at Linn-Benton Community College in Albany starting June 16.

Popular among youth ages 14-18, the State of Oregon permits youth starting at age 14 to operate power-driven farm machinery for employers, provided they pass training in a vocational agricultural safety program.

LBCC’s course places emphasis on safety, and is operated in accordance with federal regulations. The class involves some initial hands-on training with farm machinery.

The class meets Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:50 p.m. Cost for this non-credit course is $96.50 and includes materials.

Pre-registration is required and limited seating is available. Registration packets are available at all LBCC centers or online at http://www.linnbenton.edu/tractor-safety.

Students and parents must sign a Liability Waiver/Indemnification form to be submitted to the Albany office within 24 hours of registration.

Free summer lunch

Sweet Home School District will offer free lunch to all children ages 18 and under through the summer.

Meals will be served from June 17 through Aug. 21, except for July 31 due to the Oregon Jamboree.

Lunch will be served from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at Sweet Home High School, Hawthorne and Oak Heights schools, and Little Promises.

Lunch will be served from 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. at Ashbrook Park, Northside Park, and Sweet Home Skate Park.

Breakfast will also be served from 8:30 to 9 a.m. at Little Promises.

Eye support group to talk diabetes

How diabetes can affect your eyesight and the value of healthy eating for good eye health will be the topic of discussion at the Mid Valley Low Vision Support Group at 1 p.m. on June 17 at Brookdale Grand Prairie Senior Living Village, 1929 Grand Prairie Road in Albany. They will meet in the facility’s Willamette Meeting Room.

Jeana Van Dyke, a certified diabetes educator and a registered and licensed dietitian, will speak. She is on staff in the Diabetes and Nutrition Services Clinic of Albany General Hospital and has worked as both a clinical and out patient dietitian with a focus on good nutrition for the eye disease of diabetes mellitus.

This will be the first meeting at the group’s new meeting place. The program is free, all are welcome to attend, and light refreshments are served. Free transportation may be available. For more information, call (541) 928-5008.

B&G Club to host

The Boys & Girls Club of the Greater Santiam will hold its annual Linn-Co Credit Union Open – Charity Golf Tournament June 26 at Mallard Creek Golf Course.

The event has openings for 128 golfers, limited to 32 foursomes, to make the tournament fast and fun.

Foursome registration includes cart and green fees for four players, a light breakfast and BBQ lunch. The tournament is expected to raise more than $30,000 to

benefit after-school programs in both Sweet Home and Lebanon.

Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.

First-time diners are invited to come in and have a free lunch to give it a try.

Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.

The lunch menu on Friday, June 12, is chicken patty with gravy or beef liver and onions, whipped potatoes with gravy, Scandinavian blend vegetables, herb bread and orange frosted orange cake.

The menu for Monday, June 15, is Waikiki chicken or Swedish meatballs, creamed potatoes, Scandinavian blend vegetables, oat bran bread and fresh orange.

The menu for Tuesday, June 16, is Asian chicken salad or mini chef salad on spinach Romaine, cream of broccoli soup, white dinner roll and butterscotch bar.
