Theater auditions for camp, ‘Poppins’

The The Lebanon Association for Theatre Arts will hold auditions for its Kids Summer Camp at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, or Wednesday, April 29, at the Lebanon High School Auditorium.

Auditioners should be prepared to dance and sing a solo. Songs to choose from for singing are:

“Mary Had a Little Lamb,” “If You’re Happy and You Know It,” “Old McDonald,” and “You Ain’t Nothin’ but a Hound Dog.”

Camp is June 15-19 and 22-26 with performances on: June 26 and 27.

Cost is $75. Tech camp is available for those not inclined to perform but want backstage experience.

Little Promises dinner, auction

Little Promises Children’s Program will hold a dinner and auction from 6 to 9 p.m.. Saturday, May 2, at 28028 Pleasant Valley Road.

RSVPs are requested by April 30.

Dinner will be pulled pork with all the fixin’s. Cost is $15 for one plate or $25 for two. Each meal plate will include a door prize ticket.

Childcare will be available by qualified Little Promises staff for $5 per child, which includes a meal.

April 30 is forestry scholarship deadline

Linn County Small Woodlands Association plans to award four renewable $1,000 Small Woodlands Scholarships to students graduating from Linn County high schools who plan to pursue forestry or forestry-related natural history fields of study.

Application forms, to be returned postmarked or e-mailed by April 30, are available at all of the county’s high schools, at Linn-Benton Community College and from Katie Kohl at [email protected].

Farm tour April 30 to talk cover crops

Linn Soil and Water Conservation District and Oregon State University Extension will hold an information session from 3 to 5 p.m on April 30 to look at increasing soil fertility and improving soil health and biology by using cover crops.

This tour is for any farmer on any size farm wanting to learn more about building soil health utilizing cover crops. There is no cost to attend, but an RSVP would be appreciated. RSVP at http://smallfarms.oregonstate.edu/south-valley/events.

‘Ladies’ fund-raiser for Hope Center

Trash to Treasure is sponsoring Ladies Night Out, a fund-raiser for The Hope Center from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, May 1, at 1023 Main St.

Fifty percent of all sales from the store that evening will go directly to The Hope Center, a shelter for women and children.

The Oregon Jamboree has donated two three-day passes for the 2015 Oregon Jamboree, and opportunity tickets to win those passes are six tickets for $10.

All funds from tickets will be given to The Hope Center. Drawing for the Jamboree tickets will be June 1.

All community members are invited to attend Ladies Night Out. The program includes a fashion show featuring clothing provided by Trash to Treasure, and drawings all night long for door prizes along with demonstrations from vendors, such as Younique, Nerium and jewelry making with Becky Pratt.

Food for the event will be provided by The Cedar Shack.

Free concert May 1 at LDS church

A musical concert featuring organ, piano, harmonica and vocal performances, will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, May 1, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1155 22nd Ave.

Performers will include Tatiana Tolman, Henry B. Wolthuis, John Wittwer, Jennifer Ward, Rev. Roger Tetamore and William O. Lewis. The program includes a variety of classical, folk, opera and religious music.

The event is free and refreshments will be served.

Genealogy Society garage sale May 1-2

Sweet Home Genealogy Society will hold its annual Spring Garage Sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday, May 1-2, at the society headquarters, 1223 Kalmia St.

Donated items are welcome at that address prior to the sale.

The fund-raiser helps with the purchase of paid websites and computers for the public to use to research family histories.

Lebanon Garden Club Plant Sale

The Lebanon Garden Club will hold its annual Plant Sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, May 1, at Ralston Park Station on the corner of Park and Oak Streets.

The sale will in include bedding plants, perennials, dahlias, trees, shrubs and veggie starts. The Garden Club will also have a “Country Store” of garden-related used items, pots, planters, tomato cages and more, plus raffle prizes. Money raised funds maintenance of the Rose Garden at Ralston Park, the Clair Hanley Scholarship program for horticulture students, Habitat for Humanity, 4H programs and other non-profits throughout the year.

Sweet Home Assembly of God will host a free ladies’ tea and lunch at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 2, at 890 Mountain View Road.

The program includes craft and cooking demonstrations, door prizes, and giveways. Childcare is also provided.

Genealogists to discuss Sweden

Charles and Nancy Harrington will speak on Swedish research at the Linn Genealogical Society’s monthly meeting at 1:15 p.m. Saturday, May 2, at the Albany Public Library, 2450 14th Ave. SE.

The Harringtons were both born in Minnesota, but have lived in Tigard over 21 years since Charles retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1993.

They both have roots in Sweden and have used ArkivDigital for over five years. They have enjoyed traveling around the world, but spend most summers in northern Minnesota at a lake cabin.

ArkivDigital is a very powerful tool for researching in Sweden. It is basically some 53 million new color images of the original church books.

These are primarily birth, death, marriage, move-in-out, and household records – all of which they will explain.

The Harringtons will use an Albany member as an example to follow it through this genealogical source.

Fund-raiser for fireworks at A&W

A&W restaurant in Sweet Home will hold a fireworks fund-raiser and boot drive from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 4, for the Sportsman’s Holiday weekend fireworks show at Foster Lake.

Firefighters will be present with boots to collect money for fireworks and will also be cleaning tables to help.

Hospice volunteer info session May 4

Benton Hospice Service will hold a free volunteer information open house from 3 to 4 p.m. Monday, May 4, at the Lebanon Senior Center, 65 B Academy St.

The event will be held on a drop-in basis. Training for hospice volunteers, needed in the area, will be held in June.

Details will be available at the open house. Benton Hospice Service is an independent, non-profit hospice that has served Linn and Benton counties since 1980.

Diabetes group to talk Afrezza insulin

People with diabetes or pre-diabetes can learn more about managing their condition at a free monthly support group at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital.

The hospital’s Diabetes Education team hosts the group on the first Monday of each month, from 11 a.m. to noon, at the hospital. One of the team’s educators will lead a lesson, followed by time for any questions that participants may have.

This month’s topic, on May 4, will be Afrezza, the new inhaled insulin, with Kathy Hillary, Diabetes Education Team manager.

auction May 8

Holley Elementary School will hold its annual auction beginning at 5 p.m. Friday, May 8, at Sweet Home High School.

Auction items include flower baskets, entertainment tickets, a Camp Tadmor scholarship, hotel stays, restaurant gift certificates, bark dust, a rafting trip and much more. Donations continue to be accepted.

Postal carrier food drive set for May 9

Local postal workers will hold their annual Letter Carriers Food Drive on Saturday, May 9.

To participate, place non-perishable food donations in a bag next to your mailbox and the Sweet Home Post Office will deliver it to the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Sweet Home for distribution.

Meals on Wheels weekly menu

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.

First-time diners are invited to come in and have a free lunch to give it a try.

Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.

The lunch menu on Friday, May 1, is curry chicken rice or ham and pasta salad on spinach Romaine, lentil soup, whole wheat roll and golden fruit cup.

The menu for Monday, May 4, is white bean chicken chili or southwest omelet bake, steamed carrots, lime perfection salad, squash roll and chocolate zucchini brownie.

The menu for Tuesday, May 5, is chicken Spanish rice or beef enchilada bake, whole kernel corn, spinach Romaine salad, seven grain roll and baked custard.
