Genealogists plan workshop

Sweet

Home Genealogical Society will hold its 35th annual Genealogy

Workshop March 20 and 21 at the Genealogical Society Library, 1223

Kalmia St.

Registration

will be each day from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Sessions begin at 10:30.

Speakers

on Friday will be Terri Lanini on the use of Picasa, the

photo-editing program; Lon and Cathy Tidwell on organizing

photographs; and a webinar on “Using Google Earth for Genealogy”

by Lisa Louise Cooke.

Saturday’s

program includes Linda Forrest with DNA updates and a case study

using DNA; Joanne Skelton on Quaker research and what records have

become available recently; and a webinar on “Newspaper Research

– More Than Obituaries,” by Patricia Walls Stamm.

Early

registration deadline is Monday, March 16. Participants who register

early will save $5 on registration for both days ($30 for members,

$35 for non-members). Similar discounts are available for single-day

registration.

Lunch

is available for $5. Lunch will be a baked potato bar, with a side

and a salad and dessert. Participants are welcome to bring a brown

bag lunch. Coffee, tea and water will be available.

Garden

get-together Thursday in Lebanon

The

Santiam District of Garden Clubs invites all interested gardeners to

a day of fun gardening information, food and prizes from 9 a.m. to 2

p.m. Thursday, March 19, at The First Christian Church 170 E. Grant

St., Lebanon.

There

is a $1 registration fee as the day begins with coffee, continental

breakfast and a “Country Store.”

The

event includes Guest speaker Andrea Mull from Territorial Seeds with

give a Powerpoint presentation at 11:30 a.m. showing her company’s

newest seeds selections, along with merchandise for sale.

A

potluck lunch will follow, at approximately 12:30 p.m. Bring a dish

to share, along with your own table setting.

In

the afternoon club presidents and members from six area garden clubs

will share information, along with district and state officers. There

will be raffles, and door prizes.

Medicare

class in Lebanon March 19

Senior

Health Insurance Benefits Assistance, SHIBA, will hold a class that

covers the basics of Medicare parts A, B, C and D on Thursday, March

19 from 10 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. at the LBCC Lebanon Center Annex, 44

Industrial Way.

The

class is designed for anyone who will be eligible for Medicare within

a few months or is new to Medicare, or for current beneficiaries who

would like a better understanding their Medicare benefits and options

for changes or additional coverage. Spouses and other relatives are

welcome to attend. The free class is taught by a SHIBA counselor and

sponsored by Linn-Benton RSVP.

Pollinator

seminar at OSU Saturday

Oregon

State University Extension is hosting a one-day educational

conference called the BEEvent: Pollinator Conference from 8:30 a.m.

to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, March 21, at the Phoenix Inn & Suites in

Albany.

The

event is geared towards educating homeowners on what they can do in

their home landscape to support pollinator health. Three different

sessions will feature local experts, followed by a panel discussion.

There will also be a vendor fair with local honey products, bee

habitats, and pollinator friendly plants for sale. The conference is

hosted by the Linn County OSU Extension Master Gardeners.

Gem

and Mineral Show March 28-29

The

67th Annual Sweet Home Gem and Mineral Show will be held Saturday and

Sunday, March 28-29, at the Sweet Home High School Activities Gym.

Admission

is 50 cents for visitors 13 and above. Children 12 and under are free

when accompanied by an adult. They will also receive a free egg

containing polished rocks.

The

event will include multiple displays of rocks, gems, fossils and

jewelry by avid collectors, demonstrations of jewelry making and

opening geodes, dealers in all manner of rocks and mineral-related

items, raffles, door prizes and lots of activities for children.

The

event is sponsored by the Sweet Home Rock and Mineral Society, which

meets on the second Wednesday of each month at Santiam Event Center,

139 Main St. in Lebanon.

Visitors

are welcome.

The

club also is sponsoring displays of fossilized wood at the Lebanon

Public Library and Sweet Home Ranger District headquarters.

Pre-diabetes

class offered by hospital

East

Linn County residents diagnosed with pre-diabetes or similar

conditions are invited to a free eight-week class at Samaritan

Lebanon Community Hospital.

The

hospital’s Diabetes Education team will begin its next Diabetes

Prevention class on Tuesday, March 31, from 1 to 2 p.m. The weekly

class will run for eight Wednesdays, concluding on May 19. Topics

include weight loss, healthy eating, exercise and other lifestyle

changes that will help people avoid a diagnosis of diabetes.

In

addition, the hospital’s diabetes team facilitates a monthly

support group for anyone diagnosed with diabetes, pre-diabetes or

similar conditions. The group meets the first Monday of every month –

unless the first Monday is a holiday.

Pre-registration

is required for both. Participants are encouraged to complete the

Diabetes Prevention class before joining the support group, but it’s

not required.

Steelheaders

to hear from guide

Long-time

professional fishing guide Jack Glass will be the featured speaker

for the Mid-Valley Chapter of the NW Steelheaders at 7 p.m.

Wednesday, April 1, at the Albany Senior Center, 489 Water Avenue NW.

Any

angler who pays any attention at all to Oregon fishing and guiding

know of Glass, who has been guiding on the Columbia and Sandy rivers

full time for over 20 years and is a steward of the waters he fishes.

He started fishing northwest Oregon rivers at age 8, and began

professionally guiding in May of 1983 under the name Hook-up Guide

Service.

In

2005 Glass teamed up with his son Brandon and renamed his business

Team Hook-up Guide Service. He will be talking about catching

Columbia and Willamette River spring Chinook.

Door

prizes and refreshments are included. The public is always welcome

Meals

on Wheels weekly menu

Meals

on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the

Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays,

Tuesdays and Fridays.

The

Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.

First-time

diners are invited to come in and have a free lunch to give it a try.

Suggested

donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon

request and diabetic desserts are available on request.

The

lunch menu on Friday, March 20, is turkey or egg salad sandwich half

on wheat bread, vegetarian vegetable soup, carrot salw and spiced

pears.

The

menu for Monday, March 23, is chicken breast supreme or roast pork

with gravy, whipped potatoes, green beans and tomatoes, squash bread

and butterscotch bar.

The

menu for Tuesday, March 24, is chicken and dumplings or spaghetti

with meat sauce with French roll, green peas and onions, Romaine

iceberg salad and pineapple.
