Squarenaders ‘Big Foot’ dance Jan. 10

Sweet Home Squarenaders will hold a “Big Foot” Square Dance at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, at Oak Heights school gym, 6th Avenue and Elm Street.

The Plus begins at 7:30 p.m. with the main square dance following from 8 to 10:30 p.m. Square dance caller will be Leonard Snodgrass, while Jackie Gale will cue round dances.

A potluck will be held at the break. Suggested donation for the dance is $5.

Post-high school special ed training

Family and Community Together (FACT)’s Parent Training Information Center for Oregon will be at the Sweet Home High School from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, to present a training for families of students aged 14 to 21 who receive special education services and are preparing for adulthood.

The training, “Launch: Preparing for Transition to Adulthood,” will cover vision for life after school, self-determination, the role of the IEP in transition, how to access adult services in the community, guardianship and alternatives to guardianship, and employment options. Representatives from local provider agencies will be present to answer questions and share information.

The training is free and a light dinner will be served.

After Five to meet Jan. 13 in Lebanon

Lebanon’s After Five Connection for women will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, at Kings Coffee House, 651 Main St. in Lebanon.

The event, which includes dinner and a program, is themed “Your Skin is Showing.” Cost is $7, which includes the meal. Guest speaker Janna Clifford of Cottage Grove, a former nurse, will tell a story of love and relationships lost and found. MB Bradshaw will offer customized advice on makeup products and a new skin care line.

Run offers special deals for couples

Thinking about signing up for the Sweet Home’s 2015 Sweetheart Run?

The event on Valentine’s Day – Saturday, Feb. 14 – includes 10K (6.2 miles) and 5K (3.1 miles) races and a 1-mile kids run.

Special couples rates are available for people who want to sign up in tandem. Early Bird rates for couples, through Thursday, Jan. 15, are $40 for the 5K and $50 for the 10K. Fees for individual runners are $25 for the 5K and $40 for the 10K. Rates go up $5 for individuals and $10 for couples between Jan. 15 and Feb. 13, and $5 for each category on race day.

Fee for the kids run is $8 across the board.

Vision support group to meet

The Mid Valley Low Vision Support Group will meet at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, at the First Christian Church in Albany.

The program will be a display of low vision optical equipment for people who have limited vision or who are blind, and will include light refreshments and a door prize drawing.

OSU Extension

offers poultry class

The Oregon State University Extension Service in Lane County is offering a class in “Getting Started with Poultry” for small-scale and backyard poultry producers.

The class will be held Thursday, Jan. 29, at the OSU Extension Service office, 996 Jefferson St., Eugene (enter on 10th at the ramp). Sign up for either the 2-4:30 p.m. or 6-8:30 p.m. class. The class is limited to 25 students and costs $25. Pre-registration is required.

The class will cover the ins and outs of raising chickens, turkeys and other poultry and is designed for those interested in raising poultry for eggs or for meat. Dr. Jim Hermes, OSU Extension Service poultry specialist, will cover topics including hatching eggs, brooding and raising chicks, poultry nutrition, flock and bird health, breeds of poultry, and housing for poultry.

Steelheaders to meet Wednesday

LUNAFEST, a film festival of eight short movies that are selected to compel discussion, make you laugh, tug at your heartstrings and motivate you to make a difference in your community, will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31 at LaSells Stewart Center, Oregon State University, 875 SW 26th St, Corvallis.

Doors open at 6 p.m. for an art reception and displays, followed by the films at 7. Films are by, for and about women.

Meals on Wheels weekly menu

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.

First-time diners are invited to come in and have a free lunch to give it a try.

Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.

The lunch menu on Friday, Jan. 9, is meatloaf or shaved turkey sandwich half on wheat bread, lentil soup, marinated spring garden salad and spiced pears.

The menu for Monday, Jan. 12, is chicken tetrazzini or beef cabbage bake, glazed carrots, spinach Romaine salad, dill roll and pineapple.

The menu for Tuesday, Jan. 13, is chicken or egg salad sandwich half on wheat brtead, Popeye potato soup, carrot Mandarin salad and butterscotch bar.
