Kayakers rescued after spilling in chilly S. Santiam

Two women were rescued Sunday morning, March 31, after their kayaks overturned in the South Santiam River near Sun Lane.

According to Lt. Zach Lincoln, Sweet Home Fire and Ambulance District personnel responded to a call 10:28 a.m.

Rescue crews were able to reach one victim, who was clinging to a small downed tree in the middle of the river, with a rescue jet boat.

The second victim was able to get back into her kayak and was directed to a riverbank near a home on Walkerwood Lane, where crews were able to access her.

Both said they were cold but did not need medical attention.

Both victims were wearing life jackets, Lincoln said. He said boaters should be careful to dress appropriately.

At the current river temperature, 43 degrees, the human body will lose dexterity within five minutes and unconsciousness can set in within 30 minutes.
