Warming shelter open at Fir Lawn

Fir Lawn Lutheran church is hosting a warming shelter through at least the end of this week, providing a place for the homeless to get out of freezing weather at 109 W. Holley Road.

The shelter opens at 9 p.m. Doors close at 11 p.m. Those staying in the shelter may remain through 7 a.m. the next morning. Warm soup and drinks are offered at night, and a bag breakfast and warm drink are offered in the morning.

The shelter opened for the first time Saturday night, Feb. 9, said Fir Lawn Pastor Joe Medley. No one stayed the first night. Two people stayed Sunday night.

The shelter needs volunteers, particularly men, Medley said. The goal is to have a man and woman staffing the shelter overnight. Ideally, volunteers will work in shifts.

He said it would be particularly helpful for those who volunteer overnight if other volunteers could help by setting up and cleaning up at the beginning of the night and in the morning.

The shelter will continue operating through at least Saturday when temperatures reach freezing, Medley said. If the weather stays cold, the shelter will likely be open beyond Saturday.

For more information, to volunteer or to donate, contact Medley at (503) 708-0414, Amy Phillipsen at (541) 760-1414 or Janet McInerney at (909) 615-6723.

The shelter, called ONE SHELTER (Sweet Home Emergency Low Temperature Refuge), has a Facebook page which will list needed supplies and visitors can volunteer.
