Main Street building burns

Firefighters work to extinguish a fire burning at the east end of an empty building at 1218 Main St. Monday night. George Oliver, a patron at the Final Frontier, uses a fire extinguisher in an attempt to halt the fire. He said he was the first to notice the fire. Firefighters responded at approximately 11 p.m. The building is owned by White’s Electronics. According to county assessment records, it was built in 1942. The last commercial business was a TV satellite business owned by Ed Volkers in the 1990s. The cause had not been determined before press time.
