Three local elementary school students are the grand prize winners of the 2006 Smokey Bear Fire Prevention Poster Contest.
Their posters were selected from approximately 350 painted by students in the area’s grade schools. Contestants painted signs warning about the danger of forest fires. Sweet Home High School teacher Gelindo Ferrin’s art students replicated the elementary students’ posters on plywood, which have been placed on the three main arteries leading into the Willamette National Forest.
The grand prize winners were:
Elli Rassbach, a fourth-grader at Oak Heights School, who painted a fire burning a tree with a red slash over them and the words “Keep Our Forests Green.” Her poster, replicated by Caitlyn Geil, is located just east of Sunnyside Campground on Quartzville Road.
Michelle Ducan, a fourth-grader at Holley School, who painted a campfire being doused with a container of water and the words “Save Oregon” and “Put out your fires!” Her poster, replicated by Tabetha Phillips Sparhawk, is located on Calapooia Road.
Elizabeth Daboling, a fifth-grader at Foster School, who painted a picture of flames, with the words “Help Smokey Bear Prevent Fires.” Her poster, replicated by Sam Gould, is located on Highway 20 across from The Point restaurant.
The prevention posters were on display in the city library in May. Poster winners also are eligible to ride on the Oregon Department of Forestry and U.S. Forest Service float in the Sportsman’s Holiday Parade on July 8.
