Woman dies in fall on Three-Fingered Jack

A 23-year-old college student died when she fell after completing a climb on Three-Fingered Jack in eastern Linn County on July 23.

At approximately 2 p.m., Kathryn Michele Tinnesand of Hillsboro fell approximately 700 feet when returning from a climb on Three-Fingered Jack.

She and a group of fellow climbers were returning down a trail on the south side of the mountain, Sheriff Tim Mueller said. Witnesses reported she fell from a ledge. A climber who witnessed the fall was able to work his way down to the victim and found her deceased.

An Air Life helicopter from Bend shuttled members of the Camp Sherman Hasty Team close to the scene. Linn County deputies, members of the Linn County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Post and members of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse asssisted in recovering the victim. Climbers from Corvallis Mountain Rescue Unit were on standby to assist if necessary.

Crews brought the victim out of the Mt. Jefferson Wilderness area just before midnight.
