The Alzheimer’s Network of Oregon announces that it is sponsoring a “Walk to Remember” to raise funds to help families dealing with Alzheimer’s disease in Linn and Benton counties.
Linn-Benton Community College will be the site of the walk on Saturday, September 25, with registration starting at 9 a.m. and the walk beginning at 10 a.m. The walk will feature free snacks for participants, entertainment and activities, information booths from local businesses and organizations of interest to families dealing with the disease including the Sweet Home Senior Center, individual and team awards, prizes, and a Borders book sale. Those walkers who bring in at least $65 in donations to the walk will earn a t-shirt.
Over 5,000,000 people in the United States have Alzheimer’s disease with over 10,000 estimated to have the disease in the mid-valley. The Alzheimer’s Network of Oregon serves people with the disease, their families, and caregivers in the Linn, Benton, Marion, and Polk county area and money raised from the walks will be used locally.
The Alzheimer’s Network sponsors an Alzheimer’s disease support group led by Helen Ramsdell, manager of the Sweet Home Senior Center, that meets at the Center from 1-2:30 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of each month. The Network also provides information and referral, support groups, a newsletter, speaker’s bureau, help line, memory screening, and a program for those in the early stage of the disease.
