School Board: Watershed educator seeks Foster write-in votes

Angela Clegg, the South Santiam Watershed Council watershed education coordinator, is seeking the Foster seat on the Sweet Home School District Board of Directors as a write-in candidate.

Foster is one of three positions, along with Crawfordsville and Cascadia, for which no candidate filed in the May 19 election. The Linn County clerk has already mailed ballots to voters.

Three positions – two at-large and one Sweet Home, have a single incumbent candidate, including Jason Van Eck, Nick Augsberger and Chairman Mike Reynolds.

Election winners will serve four-year terms.

Following the election, the School Board may seek and appoint applicants for the vacant positions. If an eligible resident of the specific area does not apply, it may open the position to candidates across the entire district.

I have had, and continue to have successful collaborations with a large number of people in the educational environment,” Clegg said. “I work with Oregon colleges, universities, high schools, grade schools, state educational coalitions, foundations, etc., to bring quality natural resource educational programs, resources and funding to our community.

One of the reasons for my success has been an ability to work well as a member of a team to accomplish important tasks. It is a high priority for this district that we perform as a cohesive unit including board members, district personnel, staff, teachers and community members.”

Clegg has been the coordinator of the South Santiam Watershed Council’s STEWARDS youth programs since 2011.

Although she does not teach in a traditional classroom setting, she works closely with teachers and school administrators to ensure that goals and standards of her programs align with that of the teachers and the school district, Clegg said.

Since 2011, I have taught in a variety of venues and understand the needs of teachers, students and parents.”

Along with developing educational programming, she develops and manage the budgets for the STEWARDS programs, Clegg said. As a nonprofit business, she must budget, write and manage grants to fund her programs and administrative expenses.

While I understand that school district budgets are quite different from a nonprofit budget, my experience in fiscal responsibility is a great strength,” she said. “I will come to this job with an open mind and the objectivity necessary to perform all of the functions of a school board member. I am willing and eager to devote the time and energy that this community deserves in fulfilling my duties as a member of the Sweet Home School District board.

I would appreciate your write-in vote.”

In other local elections, incumbent board President Tim Geil faces a challenger, Don Schlies for the Sweet Home Fire and Ambulance District Board of Directors. Larry Johnson and Elmer Riemer, both incumbents, are unopposed.

The Sweet Home Cemetery District has one open position on its three-person board, but no candidate has filed for it.
