A 2-year-old girl was transported to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital with bleeding to the brain following an injury allegedly caused by a relative’s boyfriend.
Following an investigation, police arrested Dylan James Johnston, 21, of Albany for first-degree criminal mistreatment, third-degree assault and failure to register as a sex offender.
At about 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 5, Sweet Home medics responded to 1530 Tamarack St., space 85, Mountain Shadows Manufactured Home Park, and located an unresponsive 2-year-old girl.
The child’s mother reported that she had gone to the store with her sister, said Police Chief Bob Burford. They left the child and two other small children with the sister’s boyfriend, Johnston.
When the women returned, Johnston told them that he had heard a noise in the bedroom and had found the girl on the floor unresponsive with a 3-year-old standing nearby, Burford said. Johnston did not summon medics and waited for the mother to return. She called for medics.
The girl was transported to Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital and then transferred immediately to Doernbecher.
Medics alerted Sweet Home police to a possible child abuse, Burford said.
At about 5:45 p.m. on Nov. 7, police arrested Johnston based on the investigation and medical examinations at Doernbecher.
Johnston was lodged at Linn County Jail.
