Coward resigning from City Council

City Councilor Jessica Coward resigned effective Dec. 31.

Coward has been on the City Council since she was appointed on June 24, 2003 to fill a vacancy left Robert G. Danielson. She was re-elected in November 2004. Her term ends on Dec. 31, 2008.

“It is with a mixture of joy and sorrow that I have to submit to you my resignation from the Sweet Home City Council,” Coward said in a letter to the council. “I believe that I told the council, when I first applied to fill a vacancy, that I found Public Works fascinating. It is true. So much so that I have accepted a marriage proposal from the Director of Public Works (Jim Ruef) for the city of Lebanon.

“I have truly enjoyed my involvement with the city of Sweet Home, from serving on the Budget Committee; Planning Commission; and most of all, City Council.

“I will miss living in Sweet Home. I love this community because of the common sense of purpose, the ability of the citizens and organizations to pull together to make things happen and positive attitude of the majority of the citizens. Sweet Home is a beautiful, friendly, can-do community.

“I would like to publicly commend the leadership of this community, both in this room and those who work outside of these chambers. I will miss each and every one of you.”

Residents interested in serving on the City Council should call 367-8969 for information on applying. Applications are due at City Hall, 1140 12th Ave., by 5 p.m. on Jan. 13.

The City Council will appoint a replacement for Coward. Coward’s successor will serve the remainder of her term.
