MaryLois (Short) Munts Shanks July 25, 1918 – Oct. 16, 2016

MaryLois walked with the Lord and he took her home on Sunday Oct. 16, 2016.

She was born July 25, 1918 to Gordon F. and Alice (Carpenter) Short at her grandparents’ home in Cascadia, Oregon (which is still being lived in today).

She attended a one-room school house in Cascadia through eighth grade and graduated from Sweet Home Union High School in 1935.(Her high school classmates crowned her May Queen that year).

In 1938 she entered Emanuel Hospital School of Nursing in Portland. She graduated from the program as a registered nurse in 1941. She worked at the Lebanon General Hospital and the Lebanon Community Hospital. (She enjoyed being a nurse).

MaryLois married George H. Munts on Aug. 6, 1944. The couple lived in Cascadia, where they raised their two children. George passed away December of 1982 of Parkinson’s disease.

MaryLois married Luther R. Shanks Dec. 3, 1988 and she moved to Tennessee Road near Lebanon. Luther preceded her in death on Aug. 6, 1999. In May of 2005 she moved to the Oaks at Lebanon, where she resided until her death.

Special thanks to all the staff at the Oaks for their care for the past 11 years. “They are all so good to me.” Also, thanks to Samaritan Evergreen Hospice for their care and concern and she especially enjoyed the lady who came and played the harp.

MaryLois loved the Lord and attending the Lebanon First Baptist Church. She was very frugal being a child of the Depression.

As a child, she went to Portland with 25 cents, went to all the stores, and came home with 25 cents.

She enjoyed sewing, stamp collecting, taking pictures, growing large gardens, family reunions and knitting in her later years. She was the historian for her family and the community of Cascadia. She has many notebooks full of clippings and pictures. She wrote a book of her relationships with all the people in her life growing up. She will be extremely missed.

MaryLois was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; brothers Joe and Johnnie Short; and sister Helen (Short) Pratt Shearer.

She is survived by a son, Richard and wife Loleta Munts; daughter Phyllis and husband Chris Jensen of Sweet Home; grandchildren Linda Anderson, David Jensen and Dee Gaylord; great-grandchild Nickolas; five great-great-grandchildren, Tucker, Levi, Camren, Amira and a girl on the way in November; stepchildren, Rod and wife Lauretta Shanks, Gary Shanks and LaDonna Shanks and all their grandchildren and great-grandchildren; niece, Lynn Banzhaf; and many other nieces and nephews.
