Betty Loretta Brown

Aug. 23, 1925 – June 24, 2014

Betty Loretta Brown, 88, of Sweet Home passed away Tuesday, June 24, 2014.

She was born in Myrtle Point to Raymond and Nancy “Laura” (Holtsclaw) Smith.

She grew up in Glendale. She graduated from Canyonville High School, was Valedictorian of her class and was a champion speller.

Betty married Claude W. Brown October 1, 1945. They moved to Sweet Home and raised four children.

She enjoyed traveling by car, doing crossword puzzles, watching Jeopardy, birdwatching and feeding especially her humming birds. She liked shopping, reading, gardening and listening to the rain. Betty loved spending time with family especially during the holidays and taking numerous pictures whenever they were all together. She loved the Oregon coast, even when it was stormy.

Betty was liked by all who knew her. She will be missed greatly by her family and friends.

Betty is survived by a son Steve and his wife Kathy Brown of Sweet Home; daughter Gayle and her husband Scott Adams of Sweet Home; son-in-law Richard Latch (lifelong partner of Jerry) of Des Moines, Iowa; sister Alonia Smith of Lebanon; brother Gene Smith of Lewisburg; five grandchildren: Jeremy Brown-Gourley, Chad Brown, Rachael Hicks, Heather Pollock and Anthony Rose; five great-grandchildren: Cole, Brooklyn, Kiana, Ellie and Tegan. Betty also loved her grand dogs.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband in 1962 and two oldest sons: Jerry C. Brown of Des Moines, Iowa in 1998 and Richard A. Brown of Lebanon in 1984.

A graveside service was held June 30, 2014 at Gilliland Cemetery in Sweet Home.

Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.
