Richard “Dick” D. Leland, 68, died Wednesday, May 7, 2014, in Benson, Ariz. after a short illness.
In his final moments he was surrounded by family and friends who loved him dearly.
He was born in Albany on July 1, 1945 to Charles H. and Rulana E. (Glover) Leland. He lived in Albany and Sweet Home before moving to Tucson, Ariz., and then to Benson more than 30 years ago.
He served in the Navy and then worked as a police officer in the Albany and Sweet Home area. Later he worked in Arizona as a correctional officer before retiring due to ill health. He received a heart transplant that allowed him to live an additional 20 years and resume work.
Mr. Leland is survived by his wife of 24 years, Dora; his children, Richard Jr., Dawn and son-in-law David, Cindy, Cassandra, Cecilia and son-in-law Gary, Diana and son-in-law Dufronio, Denise and son-in-law Curtis, and Melina and son-in-law Abraham, who reside in Oregon, Arizona and California. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Regina and brother-in-law Jim; and a brother, Charles and sister-in-law Shannon.
A memorial service was held May 13 at East Lawn Palms Mortuary in Tucson. Memorial services are planned for later this year in Mexico and Albany.
