Rolland Conklin

Rolland C. Conklin, 93, of Sweet Home died March 6, 2014.

He was born Jan. 4, 1921 in Sutherlin to Albert Edson and Floy (Bolinger) Conklin. He was raised in the Sutherlin and Cottage Grove area.

He served in the United States Army from Oct. 23, 1942 to his honorable discharge on Jan. 20,1945.

Mr. Conklin drove trucks hauling military supplies and equipment. He also maintained and serviced the truck.

His last year of military service was at Camp Adair in Corvallis, where he met and married Doris May Hollingsworth on June 10, 1945. One and a half years after they were married they moved to Sweet Home, where they have lived ever since.

Mr. Conklin worked for 37 years at Santiam and later at Willamette Industries until his retirement at 62.

In his early retirement years he made and collected clocks and made toys for his grandchildren. He and his wife spent a number of years traveling in their RV with friends and fellow mill retirees.

Mr. Conklin is survived by his wife of 69 years, Doris May of Lebanon; his son Eugene Conklin of Longview, Wash.; three daughters, Christine Ford of Portland, Carolyn Martin of Kelso, Wash., and Catherine Herstad of Gig Harbor, Wash.; 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four siblings, George Conklin, Lela Clifton, Doris Junte and Beaulah Usinger.

Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.
