Dorothy Maxine King

December 29, 1919 – January 23, 2014

Dorothy M. King, 94, of Lebanon went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014.

Dorothy was born Dec, 29, 1919 in Hubbard, Ore., the daughter of Silas and Salome (Hartzler) Yoder. Her mother passed away when she was a young child and she was raised by Silas and her stepmother, Lillie.

She lived near Hubbard throughout her childhood where she attended her schooling. At the age of 18, she took a job as a nanny and worked in Pasadena, Calif. for one year.

She married Lyle King in Hubbard on May 3, 1942. The couple built a home in Sweet Home where they resided for the next 35 years. In 1977 they moved to Lebanon, where she has resided since.

Dorothy was a long-time member of the Sweet Home Mennonite church and actively involved with the church women’s sewing and quilting ministry. She and husband Lyle helped start the Cascadia Mennonite Church, where she taught Sunday school and Bible School and was active for over 40 years.

She also enjoyed gardening, tending to her flower garden, baking, cooking and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a very gracious listener and was a mom and grandma to many.

She was preceded in death by her husband Lyle; son Duane; daughter Linda Garber; brother Glen Yoder; and sisters Mabel Yoder and Lora Marshall.

She is survived by her sons, Don and wife Erna King of Albany, Mike and wife Sandra King of Lebanon; daughter-in-law Ardis Nofziger of Canby; son-in-law Jim Garber of Lebanon; sister, Violet Hopkins of Lebanon; 13 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held Jan. 28 at Gilliland Cemetery, with a memorial service following at the Sweet Home Mennonite Church.

Her family suggests donations in Dorothy’s memory can be made to the East Linn Christian Academy, c/o Huston-Jost Funeral Home, 86 W. Grant St. Lebanon, OR 97355.
