Gloria Carter

Gloria Jean Carter, 72, of Sweet Home, died Dec. 28, 2013.

She was born March 13, 1941 in Platte, S.D., the daughter of Jerald and Leona (Achilles) Underwood. Her family later moved to Battle Ground, Wash. She came to Sweet Home in 1951.

Mrs. Carter volunteered for Boys and Girls Club, working the concession stand. She enjoyed camping and gardening, feeding and watching humming birds and seeing eagles flying in the local area. She also enjoyed playing pinochle and crocheting, as well as going to casinos with loved ones.

She is survived by her husband, James “Sonny” Carter; daughters Teresa and son-in-law Rick Riper, and Dianne and son-in-law Mike Cochran, all of Sweet Home; son Todd and daughter-in-law Tammy Carter of Sweet Home; brother Leland Underwood and sister-in-law Barbara of Springfield; sister-in-law Vicki Underwood of Sweet Home; step-brother Carlyle and wife Dot Achilles; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Carter was preceded in death by her father, Jerald Underwood (1988); mother Leona Underwood (2010); and brother Jerald Underwood (January 2013).

A viewing is planned from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 2, at Sweet Home Funeral Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 3, at the First Baptist Church in Sweet Home, with a reception following.

In lieu of flowers, donations can go to the Sweet Home Boys and Girls Club and Mrs. Carter’s Thursday Pinochle Club through Linn-Co Credit Union in Sweet Home.

Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.
