He was born March 2, 1936 in Foster to Otto and Pearl (Dove) Slater. He was raised in Quartzville and Sweet Home. He went to Sunnyside School.
In 1968 he moved to South Bend, Wash., later returning to Sweet Home. He owned Slater Logging with his brother Caryl until 1974. He worked at G&H logging and Willamette Industries until retiring.
