Wilma A. Alvarez

July 10, 1942 – Sept. 7, 2006

Wilma A. Alvarez, 64, of Sweet Home died Sept. 7. 2006.

She was born on July 10, 1942 in Cherokee, Okla., the daughter of Tomie and Bernice (Beckwith) Robbins. For many years she lived between Oklahoma and Oregon before eventually settling in Oregon. She lived in Portland, Newberg and Gaston. She especially loved the town of Gaston.

Mrs. Alvarez came to Sweet Home three years ago due to her health and a desire to be closer to her grandchildren. She had been recently attending the United Methodist church in Sweet Home, where she enjoyed the friendships she made at the Friday Night Dinners.

Mrs. Alvarez was very proud and devoted to her family and will be remembered as a wonderful cook who filled buckets of tollhouse cookies for her family to enjoy. She had an interest in her Native American heritage, collecting antiques and artifacts.

She is survived by her children: Kim M. Velarde of Woodburn, Bradley A. Newport of Sweet Home, Donald A. Bettler of Philadelphia, Pa. and Timothy N. Bettler of Gaffney, SC; 10 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Her parents, one sister and three brothers all preceded her in death.

A graveside service was held Tuesday, Sept. 12, at Winona Cemetery in Tualatin.

Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.
