David C. Powell, 80, a lifelong resident of the Lebanon area who taught school for many years in Sweet Home, died at home on Sept. 18, 2007.
He was born to John and Lillian (Coppock) Powell on Aug. 16, 1927 in Mill City. His early years were spent growing up in Berlin. The family moved to Lebanon, where he attended Lebanon High School.
During his senior year, he joined the Navy during World War II. After serving in the Navy, he and Joan (Voegelien), his grade school sweetheart, were married.
He graduated from Oregon College of Education and began his teaching career in the Sweet Home School District. David was a teacher and later a school administrator until retiring. Upon retirement David and Joan made 20 short-term mission trips in 12 countries. In between trips they enjoyed hunting, camping, and fishing with their seven grandchildren. Attending their grandchildren’s sporting events also was a big priority.
He is survived by his sons, D.J. of Lebanon, and Dan and his wife Marsy of Turner; a sister, Margaret Fitzwater of Lebanon; a brother, Jack of Portland; seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
David was preceded in death by his wife Joan on Nov. 10, 2001, and two sisters, Helen Haskins and Lura Neuschwander.
Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 24, at the Lebanon Evangelical Church, located at the intersection of Vine and Park streets. Burial will follow at the Powell Cemetery in Berlin. On-line condolences for the family may be left at http://www.hustonjost.com.
