It took more than 20 men from state police, Linn County Sheriff’s Office, Sweet Home Fire Department and Ambulance to successfully rescue James Buchanan, of Marcola, from his demolished log truck.

He was pinned in his truck for two hours 100 feet below Highway 20 beside the river while rescuers sawed his steering wheel apart to retrieve him.

Buchanan was westbound on Highway 20 about 15 miles east of Sweet Home when his load shifted on a curve.

He lost control of the truck and went down the bank to land upside-down with the trailer on top of the cab. He was treated at the hospital and released.

The Sweet Home Post Office joined area offices to sell food stamps. Low-income households can trade the amount of money it is determined they could spend for food for food coupons that are worth more.

The Dept. of Ag puts up the difference. The Food Stamp Program is a U.S. Dept. of Agriculture family feeding program administered by the Food and Nutrition Services of USDA in cooperation with State Welfare Agencies.

A few hundred people will fan out across Sweet Home to deliver a free copy of a best-selling book to every home. The book is a modern translation of the New Testament titled, “Good News to Modern Man.”

The distribution is a cooperative effort between 15 Sweet Home area churches as their part of Phase II in “Key 73,” a continent-wide evangelical effort sponsored by over 130 Christian denominations and organizations in the U.S.

The city budget committee focused its interest on two new half-time positions in the proposed budget.

One of the positions makes a current half-time position in the planning office full time because the workload is too heavy to handle with its current 1.5 positions. The other creates a half-time position in the municipal court to help the court get its filing system together and organized.

A Willamette River Basin Reservoir Study Workshop was conducted to help determine how stored water in dams throughout the Willamette Valley should be utilized over the next 20 to 50 years.

Information at the workshop indicated holding as much water as possible for as long as possible has advantages such as recreation and aesthetic value, but disadvantages such as a decrease in downstream water for irrigation and recreation.
