Writer paints with too broad a brush

Editor:

Diane Daiute is inaccurately generalizing again in her letter entitled “Kids’ lawsuit flies in the face of power.” (Aug. 19).

Not all Republicans are evangelical, and not all Evangelicals are Republicans!

Of the many dozens of Evangelicals I’ve known personally in six states over the past 70 years, none have been “earth strippers” but, rather, rational conservationists.

We might die suddenly or slowly at any time – have you made a will? – but meanwhile we plant and reap as if we and our grandchildren will need to eat for the next decade or century. Resources are to be used as needed, monitored and managed. God gave seeds and fruits for food, but didn’t say, “Here’s more than you need, have fun with it!” to waste or hoard.

The Bible has a lot to say about greed. A greedy Christian is an oxymoron in the biblical analysis: He’s either one or the other, but not both simultaneously. “No one can serve both God and mammon (wealth),” Jesus himself said.

Can’t Ms. Daiute use some modifiers, rather than painting all her supposed opponents with the same brush? Republicans are a group; Evangelicals are a group. There is some overlap, but they are by no means synonymous.
