Book’s language not classroom fare

Editor:

With all the talk that seems to be going on around in this community about the book “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian,” I decided to read the book and see what the talk was all about.

In my opinion I don’t believe this book should be banned from schools, but I also don’t believe this book should be read in class to a bunch of 13- or 14- year-old eighth-grade students. I’m sorry, but to me it is totally unacceptable in having our students subjected to this sort of language such as, “retard, bastard, (n-word) and masturbation,” to name a few.

Schools don’t accept this sort of language from students. Neither students nor parents should have to be subjected to read a book like this which has been controversial; yes, in some school districts this book has been banned.

I’m sure there are plenty of other books more suitable for students to read in a classroom environment.

Yes everybody has a right to their own opinion, but we must also respect the space between the two.
