Thanks to SMART vols

Editor:

SMART – Start Making A Reader Today – is an excellent program for primary students, kindergarten through third grade. At Hawthorne this program has been continuing for over 10 years. Through this program, a student reads with an adult volunteer for 30 minutes per visit. The reading is adult directed as the volunteers have been trained with viable reading practices. The storybook is one that is selected by the student, so there is a high level of interest and motivation on their part.

At Hawthorne Elementary this school year, we have 30 volunteers working with our SMART program. At Holley Elementary there are currently five volunteers, and five more are needed. The volunteers commit to one hour per week of working one-to-one with two different students, 30 minutes with each. We have many volunteers who helped last school year and are choosing to continue with this school year.

Reading development looks to be the main goal, but the building of relationships in support of student growth and development is a close second. I also know, from visiting with the volunteers, they themselves too receive much fulfillment from working with the students. The volunteers take pride in the students’ growth as a reader, truly enjoying the time spent with them. I was told by one volunteer that “the little guy” she worked with “provided her with something positive to look forward to each week.”

It was evident that their relationship had grown very important to her and the child. I believe that is definitely one of the major outcomes of SMART, the building of positive relationships. This is an experience that will provide great support for the child and a lasting memory for the adults.

I want to take this time to say “thank you” to all of the volunteers in our SMART program. You are helping to make a difference in our community.
