Let traffic fines pay for cops

Editor:

As a volunteer for the budget and safety committees here in Sweet Home, I have some doubts. At the last Safety Committee, I brought up again, the problem we have with police patrol. I was standing outside a business on Hwy 20 and Pleasant Valley Road.

In a 30- to 40-minute time span, I witnessed at least 10 vehicles speeding at high rates. I am told that the Police Department is understaffed, but I pose this question: “If there was a police officer at this intersection every day for one month, that would be 300 moving violations, correct?”

And guessing at possibly $50 a ticket, that equals $15,000. We all know the amount would triple if the police officer stayed for over 30 minutes in just one day. They could make enough revenue to hire 10 more policemen. Then look at all the revenue.
