Weeks of preparation were climaxed Saturday with Frontier Days’ grand parade which packed the streets of Sweet Home with thousands of spectators. The parade’s sweepstakes award for the best entry was taken for the third year by Weeks Chevrolet company, with the winning float living up to the three-day celebration’s theme for ’55 ? “The Good Old Days.”
Eleven new teachers will greet Sweet Home Union high school students when they go back to school on Tuesday, Sept. 6.
A critical shortage of agricultural workers for season crops developed during July and is expected to increase around the last of August while logging and lumbering employment was estimated at its highest level for the past three years.
All area youngsters who have not purchased bicycle licenses have been urged to do so by Roy Clover, chief of police, because of a wave of stolen bikes at the community swimming pool. All of the bikes that have been taken from the pool have been ones with no licenses, Clover said.

Sweet Home school district superintendent Joey Acaiturri has resigned his position. That resignation will be effective at the end of the 1980-81 school year, next June 30. He had been superintendent of the Sweet home school district #55 for nine years and has been in education for 31 years, 29 of those as superintendent. He plans to retire upon leaving the Sweet Home schools. He is 56.
City Council has decided to sell the railroad right-of-way between 10th and Elm St. to adjoining property owners but did not take a formal vote on the issue at Tuesday night’s regular council meeting, awaiting a final review of the sale by the city parks board. Residents adjacent to the right-of-way, represented by Patricia Tack of 1435 Elm, had requested at the last regular City Council meeting July 29 that they be allowed to purchase the property.
The building boom returned to the Sweet Home area in July, ending a long drought in housing construction. In fact, housing construction led the way to a mammoth $637,755 in evaluation of building permitted in July in the Sweet Home area.
