Money key to gun numbers

Editor:

The war on guns is over and, as usual, we lost.

Think of guns as drugs, the gun manufacturers as the drug cartels, the NSSF and NRA et al as the pushers/dealers and you got it. Same same. Making as much money as fast as possible is the cause.

There is no patriotism going on here, no bulwark building to defend the USA and her free society. The only freedoms the NRA, NSSF et al have in their sights is their personal financial freedom (it’s a job). And you can’t argue with their stellar results.

The gun manufacturers have brazenly labeled President Barack Obama as the “best gun salesman of all time.” thanks to the NRA/NSSF’s PR teams who have instilled this fear and haven’t let up on the button.

They estimate there are 45.5 million mentally unstable people in America. A ready audience for the NRA/NSSF.

Friends and family portrayed Adam Lanza’s mother Nancy as a paranoid survivalist, who believed the world was on the verge of violent, economic collapse. She had been stockpiling food, water and guns. She drank the Kool-aid. No wonder her husband divorced her and fled.

The NRA and NSSF et al have also worked successfully to undermine with loopholes every piece of legislation put forth. And again I stress that your freedom and safety have nothing to do with it.

It’s your money they want.

Kalashnikov said, “It is good to see all the capitalists marketing their products.” Americans supporting Russia. No, we don’t discriminate when it comes to making money.

In 2007 Bush signed into law H.R. 2640, which requires states to report to the NICS names of criminals, those declared mentally ill, and others.

Well, surprise, surprise: More than half the states are not complying. For instance, according to the FBI, Oregon has submitted to NICS only 24,729 mental patients’ names.

Yet, according to SAMHSA 5.4 percent of Oregon’s population have what’s considered to be a serious mental illness – 209,722 people! The percentage of Oregon residents having had some kind of mental illness in the past year is 20.6 percent – that’s 800,049 people. A bit of under-reporting there.

I don’t see what any law abiding citizen has to fear about loophole-free laws aimed at keeping guns out of the hands of as many criminals, would-be criminals, anger-management drop-outs, and unstable personalities as possible. That’s a good thing, a good goal to shoot for. Plus, it gives you, the law-abiding gun guy, the upper hand. Your team has more.

I’m OK with home defense, by the way. I’m not OK with assault weapons.

Every day, 34 Americans are murdered with guns. At that rate Sweet Home would be a ghost town in just 265.73 days, a hair shy of nine months.
