After six short weeks – about half the normal time – of preparation, Sweet Home’s track and field athletes will test themselves against the competition in the Oregon West Conference district meet Friday and Saturday, May 14 and 15, at Stayton.
The Huskies have shown marked improvement across the board this year, with several athletes establishing themselves as top prospects for the state championships, which will be held May 21-22 at Siuslaw in Florence.
Senior Tristan Calkins is ranked in the top three in the state in the 100 and 200 and the long jump, behind two Newport jumpers in the latter. The top two finishers in the conference meet will get state berths. Calkins is first in the OWC in the 200 and second in the 100.
Junior Charles Crawford is ranked first in the conference in the shot after posting a 1½-foot PR last week (41-4½) in a home meet against Stayton and Santiam Christian, while junior Tanner Waldrop is third in the discus after posting a seven-foot PR with a throw of 119-1 in the same meet.
Coach Nathan Whitfield decided to let his seniors choose the events they wanted to compete in the Stayton meet and Calkins tried the javelin for the first time since he was a freshman, throwing 144-9, which puts him second in the conference, six inches ahead of teammate Mason Lopez.
Eddy Martinez-Maya is ranked eighth in the conference in the 800 (2:09.26), after posting PR’s nearly every time he’s run that distance this year, never behind an actual competitor on the track.
The boys short relay team of Crawford, Lopez, Jorel Leyba and Aiden Shamek are third in the league with a time of 47.78, and Whitfield said he believes the Huskies can go even faster, depending on who’s in the mix.
On the girls side, the short relay is ranked fourth in the OWC with a 54.14 from Crystal Wolf, Shelbey Nichol, Lydia Wright and Jessy Hart, but that time is only 1½ seconds behind league leader Cascade (52.51), so, as Whitfield has noted, anything can happen at districts – particularly this year.
“We have potential,” he said. “We have potential to get a lot of kids to state, so we’ll see what happens.”
Hart, who was seventh in the 400 at state two years ago as a sophomore, is ranked fourth in the 4A in that event (1:03.18), which she’s only run twice this season. She is second in the OWC behind Cascade’s Ashley Fraser (1:02.89).
Nichol is ranked seventh statewide in the shot (33-11) and second in the OWC, but her second outing this season in the triple jump, against Stayton (31-10) puts her seventh in the state and first by 1-3 in the conference.
Kailey James is ranked third in the conference in the javelin (103-1½) and Wolf is third in the long jump (15-6½), three inches behind Sisters’ Anya Shockley.
Whitfield said he’s eager to see what happens.
“It’s going to be kind of on the kids, whether they show up and compete that day and do well,” he said. “I think a lot of them will. They love to work hard and compete, so it should be fun.”
