Huskies make marks in first multi-team meet of track season

Despite the convoluted complications of competing during COVID, Sweet Home’s track and field team had another good outing, this time in a multi-team event at the Philomath Invitational Saturday afternoon, May 1.

The meet was actually divided into two sections, with Philomath, Cascade and Stayton competing in the morning and Sweet Home, Newport and Woodburn in the afternoon. Top finishers from each flight were then organized by time in the final results.

Head Coach Nathan Whitfield said the Huskies “had a good day, for the most part, especially on the track, with a lot of improvements from, really, across the board.”

Some second-place finishers might have improved even more if they’d had a competitor next to them, he acknowledged.

“They do a great job of competing and if you put someone fast next to them, they do a great job of staying right with them,” he said.

Tristan Calkins was second in the 200 (23.31) and the 400 (in a personal-best 53.16) to opponents who ran in the morning, for instance. Eddy Martinez-Maya was second in the 1500 (in a 10-second personal-best 4:24.46, which cracked the 4A top 10 as of Monday) to Newport’s James Lackey, who ran next to him, but was also second in the 3000 (in a 30-second personal-best 9:51.18) to Philomath’s Mateo Cadnoza, who ran in the morning session in 9:36.28.

On the girls side, Jessy Hart ran for the first time this season in her specialities, the 200 (29.11), in which she lost to Newport’s Stella Barber (28.33), but was second in the 400 (1:03.18) to Cascade’s Ashley Raser 1:02.89, who was in the morning race and posted the fastest time to date in the 4A division. Hart is No. 2. Whitfield noted that Hart literally returned from the airport an hour before the meet and was “jet-lagged.”

Some highlights for the Huskies were freshman Zianna Duncan’s nine-second personal best in the 800, and a three-inch PR (15-6½) for Crystal Wolf to win her third-straight long jump competition, all with big personal bests.

Gavin Walberg had a big PR in the 400, running 53.72 to cut his best by a second and a half.

Junior Charlie Crawford had a big PR to win the shot in 39-9¼, and Shelbey Nichol won the triple jump (30-7) in her first outing in that event this year, after taking second in the shot (32-3¼).

The Huskies host Stayton, Santiam Christian and possibly Alsea on Wednesday, May 5, with Oregon West JV districts on Friday at Stayton. The varsity district meet will be Friday and Saturday, May 14-15, at Stayton and state will be May 21-22 at Siuslaw.
