Track and field athletes post more personal bests at Woodburn

Week 2 of the short track and field season for Sweet Home was another big one for the Huskies in the records department.

In a dual meet at Woodburn’s brand-new track and field facility on Wednesday, April 21, Sweet Home posted 11 personal bests on the boys side and nine for the girls.

“It was a great day for track and field and the kids competed pretty well,” said Head Coach Nathan Whitfield. He said that, despite a few “kinks” as the Bulldogs got used to their new digs – “I think this was their first track meet there,” it was a good day for Sweet Home. “We’re seeing good things and improvements.”

Both the boys and girls got both relay teams on the track for the first time and Whitfield said he saw “some good things” in the 4×400 races.

Tristan Calkins was a double winner, in the 200 (23.20) and the long jump (20-7). As of Monday, Calkins had the top times in the state 4A rankings in the 100 and 200 and led the long jump as well.

Shelbey Nichol added more than half a foot to the PR she set the week before in the shot put, throwing 34-1½, which had her sitting sixth in the state rankings and second in the Oregon West Conference – two inches behind Philomath’s Mia Rust – on Monday.

“Shelbey had a great day in the shot,” Whitfield said.

Gavin Walberg won the 400 in a personal-best 55.06, which had him sitting seventh in the state rankings on Monday.

Other winners for Sweet Home were Ethan Hurst in the 800 (2:22.12), also a PR, and, in the field, Charles Crawford won the shot (39-7½) and Mason Lopez won the javelin (134-9).

For the girls, Crystal Wolf won the long jump (15-3), which had her ranked third in the Oregon West as of Monday.

On the track, freshmen Lydia Wright won the 200 (31.51) and Ivy Dewitte the 800 (3:03.09), also both PR’s.

Whitfield said the freshmen girls are playing their way onto the main stage in track.

“We’ve got a group of freshman girls who,” he chuckled, “we don’t know just where they’re going to fit in yet, but once we find their spot, they’re going to do great.

“Ivy DeWitte ran a 1:11 in the 400 (against Cascade on April 16) which, for a freshman, is not bad at all.”

DeWitte was ranked fourth in the 400 in the Oregon West on Monday and Zianna Duncan (1:15, seventh) and Rylee Markell (1:18, ninth) were also among the conference’s top-10 performers in that event as of Monday.

The Huskies will be back in action Saturday at the Philomath Invite, which will be the only multi-team competition the will see until the district meet, details of which have yet to be finalized.

The Philomath meet will be held in two sections. The host Warriors, Cascade, and Stayton will compete at 10 a.m., and Woodburn, Newport and Sweet Home (and one athlete from Neah-Kah-Nee) will compete at 2 p.m. Results will then be combined, with the top six finishers placing and scoring.
