Huskies start track season with burst of personal-best performances

After nearly two years of no track and field competition, Sweet Home’s athletes were primed and ready Friday afternoon as they hosted Cascade in a dual meet.

The boys set 21 personal bests – three from Eddy Martinez-Maya, and the girls, who were not at full strength, recorded three.

“We had a lot of great performances across the board in all events,” Head Coach Nathan Whitfield said. “We are getting people back from where they need to be from two years ago.”

Team-wise, the boys were edged 238-236 by Cascade, which fielded 33 athletes to Sweet Home’s 18.

On the girls side, the Cougars topped Sweet Home 208-174. Cascade had a larger roster there as well, with 18 competitors to Sweet Home’s 14.

Winners for the boys on the track were Tristan Calkins in the 100, in a personal-best 11.38, and the 200 (23.23), Gavin Walberg in the 400, in a personal-best 44.09, and Eddy Martinez-Maya in the 1500 (4:34.49) and the 3000 (10:12.64).

In the field events, Calkins won the long jump in 20-10, just off his personal best. Charles Crawford won the shot in a PR of 39-6½, Tanner Waldrop won the discus in a PR of 108-8, and Mason Lopez won the javelin, also in a PR, with a throw of 137-0, while Paul Amrein came away with a win in the high jump, going 5-5.

For the girls, Crystal Wolf won the 100 in 14.48, while freshman Rylee Markell led a 1-2-3 sweep by the Huskies in the 800 with a time of 3.00.99 in her first high school race at that distance.

Senior Shelbey Nichol posted a two-foot PR in winning the shot, with a throw of 33-5½, and senior Kailey James posted a five-foot PR to win the javelin with a throw of 93-0. Wolf won the long jump, going 13-11.

Whitfield noted those throws, along with freshman Lydia Wright’s third place in the 200 (32.28) and second in the long jump (11-5).

“Our group of freshman girls is kind of a fun one,” he said. “They looked really good.”

The Huskies will be on the road at Woodburn Wednesday, April 21, before taking a breather until May 1, when they are scheduled to compete at the Philomath Invite, which may be the only multi-team meet they have until the district championships.
