Girls fall to Cascade, Sisters

As their season wound down last week, Sweet Home’s girls lost games to Sisters 45-39 at home Friday and Cascade 45-33 at home Feb. 18 in basketball.

“Sisters played a great game,” said Sweet Home Coach Michelle Knight. “They had the game of their life against us.”

The Huskies were down 11-6 after the first quarter. They tied the Outlaws 17-17 by halftime and built a 24-19 lead by the end of the third quarter.

“They had three threes in a row,” Knight said. “We were down with four (late in the quarter). We were fouling, and they made every free throw. It was just like the perfect storm for them.”

Adaira Burger led the way for the Huskies, scoring 16 points. Payden Petterson scored 24 for Sisters.

The girls were scheduled to play their final game of the season at Newport Tuesday evening.

As of Monday, the Huskies were sixth in league with a record of 1-10. They were 7-15 overall.

Philomath remained in first place in the Oregon West, undefeated and ranked first in the state. Cascade, 9-2, was in second place and ranked 15th. Stayton, 8-3, was in third place and ranked 11th.

Against Cascade, “we played a good game,” Knight said. “They’re a good team. They’re going to have a play-in.”

The Huskies stayed with the Cougars through the first half of the game, trailing just 13-11 after the first quarter. Cascade led 28 -21 at halftime. Cascade pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring Sweet Home 11-2, to take a 39-23 lead. Sweet Home led the fourth quarter 10-6 to close the gap.

Brooke Burke led the Huskies with 10 points, while Kenna Coleman led Cascade with 13 points.
