Sweet Home’s boys finished second in the 4A division of the Oregon Classic tournament last weekend in Redmond, losing the final to La Grande 45-19.
The girls were fourth.
“Fourth place is a very good accomplishment,” said Coach Steve Thorpe.” There’s a lot to be said about that, especially when we forfeited two (of nine) weight classes.”
Lexi Schilling went undefeated, as Paige Chafin and Jessy Hart both bumped up a weight class.
In the boys compeititon, the Huskies swept through their pool on Friday, beating Marshfield 75-4, Sisters 72-12 and Ontario 60-21.
On Saturday, Sweet Home beat Woodburn 57-15 and Baker/Power Valley 57-24 before facing La Grande in the final.
“We finished second to a very good La Grande team,” Thorpe said. “Hats off to them. They are very, very good. They were at full strength; they had everybody where they’re going to be.”
The Huskies forfeited two weights in the match, as well as missing a couple of usual starters.
“We had guys out,” Thorpe said. In a tournament that tough, you have guys get injured, sickness. A lot of different things.”
Individually, both freshman Jake Sieminski (106) and senior Travis Thorpe (160) went undefeated over the two days.
Steve Thorpe said Christian Gregory “wrestled well” at 132 pounds and heavyweight senior David McMullen got his first matches of the season in on Friday after recovering from a football injury.
“This is the first time he’s competed,” Thorpe said. “He needs to get his wrestling legs under him.”
He said Brayden Newport got a good fall against Baker’s Jake Eskew at the last minute of their 145-pound bout, which helped the Huskies.
He added that he is very proud of his team’s consistency.
“”I can’t tell you the last time we were not in the top four of this tournament. This is a team event and we had a good team effort. I’m proud of getting second, but there are a lot of areas we need to get better at.”
The Huskies will host Tillamook, the defending state champion, Wednesday, Jan. 22. Matches begin at 6 p.m. and will include a Sweet Home Junior High dual along with junior varsity matches for the high-schoolers.
