Sweet Home’s girls placed first in the toughest field they’ve faced thus far this year, and possibly until they reach state, at the Lebanon Invitational Saturday, Jan. 4.
The meet included 5A power North Bend and schools Marist, Newport and La Grande, which look to be top-10 finishers at state. La Grande’s girls were third last year. Newport’s boys are defending state champions. North Bend’s boys and girls were third in the 5A division last year.
“I’d say this was the best overall meet of the season for our team,” Coach Doug Peargin said. “Coming into the meet, we talked as a team as to how challenging this meet would be – and it was.”
The Huskies finished a point ahead of La Grande on the girls side, 88-87.
Megan Hager won both the 50 and 100 freestyles, and helped Huskies win the 200 Medley Relay and the 200 Freestyle Relay.
Malia Hewitt and Chloe Tyler also won two individual events and each swam on one winning relay team.
Hewitt won the 500 Freestyle and the 100 Breaststroke, and Tyler won the 200 Freestyle and 100 Backstroke.
The Huskies will travel to Madras Saturday, Jan. 11, for the Madras Invitational. Their next home meet is Jan. 24. Peargin wasn’t sure who was in the field at Madras.
“Madras could also be a challenging meet, depending on who they have invited,” he said. “As a team there are still a lot of little things to clean up, but at this point in the season I’m OK with where we’re at.”
