Swimmers win girls meet as Hager breaks school record

A school record was the highlight of Sweet Home’s home meet Friday, Dec. 20, against Cascade, Stayton and North Marion, but it was a good meet all the way around for the Huskies.

Senior Megan Hager, who already owns two individual Sweet Home school swimming records and is part of three school-record relay teams, added another by breaking the 100 Butterfly record held by Rachel (Ahola) Tyler, who happened to be the timer for the lane in which Hager swam Friday.

Hager won the 100 Freestyle at Friday’s meet, in which competitors almost always swim the crawl stroke (which is popularly known as “freestyle”) but can swim any stroke, in 57.22 to pass Ahola-Tyler’s mark of 58.3.

“That’s a great way to go into Christmas break, with a school record,” said Coach Doug Peargin, who also coached Ahola-Tyler when she was swimming for Sweet Home.

Hager’s wasn’t the only personal best of the day, by far.

“We had quite a few PR’s as a team and we are starting to compete with a whole lot more effort than we did in the first two meets,” Peargin said.

Four swimmers posted two personal bests each: Micah Wright in the 200 and 500 Freestyle; Hunter Calderwood in the 200 IM and the 100 Butterfly; Maren Weld in the 200 Freestyle and the 100 Butterfly; and Chase Lopez in the 50 and 100 Freestyles.

Jacob Kennedy was the only individual winner for the boys, taking the 100 Backstroke, and helping the 200 Freestyle Relay team to a victory.

For the girls, Chloe Tyler was first in the 200 Freestyle and the 100 Butterfly; Malia Hewitt won the 200 IM and the 500 Freestyle; Hager won the 100 Freestyle and the 100 Breaststroke; and Jamie Seward won the 100 Backstroke. The girls also won all three relays, with all four of those swimmers involved in one or more.

Team-wise, the girls finished with 145 points, ahead of Cascade (78), Stayton (70) and North Marion (15). The boys were second with 74 points, behind Stayton (97) and ahead of Cascade (44) and North Marion (40).

Next up for Sweet Home will be the Stayton Invitational on Feb. 28, at which the Huskies will see Salem Academy, which Peargin expects to be a top-three team at district.

“As we’re going to get into our schedule a little deeper, our competition will start to get a lot more competitive,” he said. “Even with the lack of depth in our boys, we continue to improve our times and we’re starting to find in both our boys and girls events that we may swim come district time.”
